DescrizioneLa Chiesa del Sacro Cuore di Gesù di Santa Venerina, nacque dall’esigenza di accogliere il gran numero di fedeli del paese che già nella prima metà del XIX secolo sovraffollavano la preesistente e settecentesca chiesa matrice di “S. Venera”. L’inizio della sua costruzione avvenne nel maggio del 1875 e, per volere del papa Pio IX, l’edificio fu dedicato al Sacro Cuore di Gesù, della cui devozione risultò essere il primo in Sicilia. L'edificio internamente, si presenta a pianta basilicale a croce “incussa”. E' diviso in tre navate. Il transetto interrompe l’assialità della navata con un imponente incrocio su poderosi pilastri che tramite pennacchi sferici conducono al tamburo. Sul transetto si aprono due absidi laterali delle quali: la destra è dedicata al SS. Crocifisso e la sinistra è dedicata al SS. Sacramento. Un profondo presbiterio con volta a botte precede l’altare e l’abside centrale la cui lunetta è anch’essa affrescata come sopra descritto. Le cromìe vivaci e le tempere murali conferiscono al monumento particolare valore dal punto di vista storico artistico. A deep presbytery with a barrel vault precedes the altar and the central apse whose lunette is also frescoed as described above. The bright colors and the wall tempera give the monument particular value from the historical and artistic point of view.
