Quanto fosse grande il casale, come fosse strutturato e dove fosse la chiesa originaria non è possibile dirlo. Gli elementi architettonici e decorativi più antichi sopravvissuti a Mezzano sono quelli tardogotici (probabilmente fine 1300 – primi 1400) dell’attuale sede della Congrega del Preziosissimo Sangue (istituita nel 1854 ma forse già esistente almeno 1749 come Cappella del Corpo di Cristo): cornice della bifora all’esterno della casa contigua e portale e monofore archiacute in piperno all’interno. L’edificio della attuale chiesa, intitolata a Maria Assunta, sorge al termine di una erta gradinata (costruita nel 1875) ed è fatto risalire al 1640 (la data è attestata sull’architrave del portale in piperno). Nel 1775, Esperti la descrisse ad unica navata, con altare maggiore (con un piccolo dipinto su tavola, scomparso) e tre altari (Rosario, S. Rocco, Purgatorio). Come ricorda l’iscrizione in controfacciata, nel 1830 la chiesa fu restaurata dalle fondamenta e dotata di cantoria (1831). Altri lavori di restauro furono effettuati tra il 1857 e il ’58. La casa canonica fu eretta del 1932 ed il campanile nel 1935. In virtù dei lavori del 1965, oggi la chiesa ha due navate. La monofora (ritrovata sul fianco laterale e rimontata di recente in facciata) e l’oculo del timpano in facciata sembrano essere elementi più antichi dell’edificio attuale. Unica decorazione sopravvissuta all’interno è un Battesidmo di Gesù, probabilmente databile ai primi del 1900. The hamlet of Mezzano and its church of Santa Maria already appear in the bull of Senne (1113), in the privilege of Pope Alexander III (1179), in notarial deeds of sale (1266), of exchange (1375) and in the Rationes Decimarum ( 1310 and 1326) albeit with variations in the name of the toponym. How big the farmhouse was, how it was structured and where the original church was, it is not possible to say. The oldest surviving architectural and decorative elements in Mezzano are the late Gothic ones (probably late 1300 - early 1400) of the current seat of the Congrega del Precious Blood (established in 1854 but perhaps already existing at least 1749 as the Chapel of the Body of Christ): frame of the mullioned window outside the adjoining house and portal and archiacute single-light windows in piperno inside. The building of the current church, dedicated to Maria Assunta, stands at the end of a steep flight of steps (built in 1875) and dates back to 1640 (the date is attested on the architrave of the piperno portal). In 1775, Esperti described it with a single nave, with a high altar (with a small painting on a table, which has disappeared) and three altars (Rosario, S. Rocco, Purgatorio). As the inscription on the counter façade recalls, in 1830 the church was restored from its foundations and equipped with a choir loft (1831). Other restoration works were carried out between 1857 and '58. The rectory was built in 1932 and the bell tower in 1935. By virtue of the works in 1965, today the church has two naves. The single lancet window (found on the side and recently reassembled on the facade) and the oculus of the tympanum on the facade seem to be older elements of the current building. The only surviving decoration inside is a Baptism of Jesus, probably dating back to the early 1900s.
