Pretty old church, not very spectacular. It is worth visiting only if you go up to the Castle, but do not come specially.

It is a beautiful, well-preserved church with marvelous sculptures representing the Catholic and Christian worship, in addition the mass is pleasant and solemnly officiated by its parish priests. Worth visiting and sharing with the family.

The church of Santa Maria di Castello is the oldest sacred building in the city of Udine. Built on a site that perhaps already housed a place of worship in the past, it probably dates back to the Lombard period: this is evidenced by some stone fragments dating back to the eighth century found during the restorations of 1928-30, including a Christ Logos and a epigraph with the name of Liutprando, king of the Lombards (712-744). Little or nothing is known of its original appearance (probably with a small apse), since the church was perhaps destroyed at the time of the invasions of the Hungarians. The current construction reveals a Romanesque layout, datable to the 12th century due to its architectural features (including the partition into three naves).
