Beautiful church and place of Catholic worship.

The Gothic church of Sant'Agostino, formerly belonging to the Eremitani, is a simple but interesting religious building made of terracotta with a beautiful spire portal that encloses concentric arches and geometric motifs. The interior has a single nave and appears a little dark, perhaps to give greater prominence to the highlight, the altarpiece, a valuable polyptych by Vittore Crivelli. After the theft in 1972, the work was recovered (although not in all its parts) and restored to be able to better admire it.

Some thorns of Jesus' crown of thorns are kept inside. Very nice.

Torre di Palme, a hamlet of Fermo, is located a few km from Porto San Giorgio. It is a beautiful panoramic balcony on the top of a hill overlooking the coast and the Adriatic sea. The town, of medieval origin, offers stone houses, cobbled streets and beautiful views. There are also three churches: San Giovanni, Sant'Agostino church and the church of Santa Maria a Mare.

Walking along the small street in the village of Torre di Palme that leads to the panoramic square, approximately halfway along the route, a modest Romanesque portal, almost always closed, anticipates the existence of the church of S. Agostino. As soon as you reach the corner, however, you immediately notice a more elegant and refined portal, this almost always open, standing out in the crossbar. Don't delay! A tiny classroom in a bare Romanesque style with the first hints of Gothic affectation, and equipped with the two entrances already described, preserves a small treasure inside: a polyptych by Vittore Crivelli that stands out clearly against the back wall left in a semi-gray plaster dove-gray color, with its five partitions on two orders (a third at the shutter at the foot is very fragmented - ed) of vivid and defined sacred images between the gold glitter of the frames. It was a family dowry, because even the most famous brother Carlo, a prolific artist of the late 1400s who disseminated his works, usually on wood, throughout the province of Fermano and in Ascoli Piceno was an appreciated performer of polyptychs or of paintings on wood always with sacred or secular subjects (famous is the polyptych of the latter preserved in the cathedral of S. Emidio in Ascoli, just polished with a careful restoration (October 2021 - ed) and other significant achievements always on wood preserved in the Civic Art Gallery inside the Palazzo dell'Arengo, many also abroad). The visit concentrated on this polyptych placed behind the altar is satisfying, also because unfortunately there are only modern and out of tune adaptations of fixtures, chandeliers, equipment and accessories that do not reconcile with the age of the building and the luminous beauty. of the polyptych.
