Wikipedia: La chiesa di San Francesco d'Assisi secondo la tradizione popolare ricorda il passaggio da Oria del santo d'Assisi. L'attuale costruzione è di periodo barocco, coeva della cattedrale. In origine doveva essere una chiesetta basiliana, dedicata alla Madonna di Costantinopoli. Intorno al 1219 nei pressi di quella chiesetta basiliana fu fondato una chiesa dallo stesso san Francesco d'Assisi e dai padri francescani, di ritorno dalla Palestina. Nel XV secolo la chiesa, con l'annesso convento francescano, venne ricostruita dal principe Giovanni Antonio Del Balzo Orsini, per poi essere nuovamente rifatta nel XVIII secolo. All'interno si conservano le reliquie del beato Francesco da Durazzo ed una Pietà litica del XV secolo che era conservata nella chiesetta rupestre della Madonna di Gallana. La pianta è a croce latina. The Church of San Francesco d'Assisi in Oria is beautiful and well maintained. Immersed in the almost central urban fabric, it has numerous faithful. Wikipedia: According to popular tradition, the church of San Francesco d'Assisi recalls the passage from Oria of the saint of Assisi. The current construction is from the Baroque period, coeval with the cathedral. Originally it was to be a Basilian church, dedicated to the Madonna of Constantinople. Around 1219, near that Basilian church, a church was founded by Saint Francis of Assisi himself and by the Franciscan fathers, returning from Palestine. In the fifteenth century the church, with the adjoining Franciscan convent, was rebuilt by Prince Giovanni Antonio Del Balzo Orsini, to then be rebuilt again in the eighteenth century. Inside there are the relics of Blessed Francesco da Durazzo and a lithic Pietà of the fifteenth century which was kept in the rock church of the Madonna di Gallana. The plan is a Latin cross plan.
