★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ricordata in antico come Chiesa Abbaziale di San Benedetto, testimonia nella sua titolazione la presenza dei padri benedettini a Frosinone, la cui opera in città è accertata a data anteriore al 1153 (1), anzi, secondo alcune fonti la stessa chiesa è stata costruita dall'ordine cassinese già prima del 1134. L'edificio medievale rimane di proprietà del clero regolare probabilmente sino al 1250, quando in essa viene eretta la parrocchia.
L'edificio ecclesiale, siccome lo vediamo oggi, è frutto di un "restauro alla maniera moderna" (come si diceva nel XVIII secolo), i cui lavori iniziano l'anno 1750 sotto la direzione dell'arciprete don Bernardino Di Dini. Non si conosce il nome dell'architetto perché le fonti archivistiche trovate ci riportano solo il nome dei due "Soprintendenti della nova Fabrica di detta Chiesa": i sacerdoti Filippo Ciceroni e Teodosio Sperandio; che a quanto da loro scritto parrebbero comunque i veri artefici del disegno e della costruzione della nuova chiesa.
La "nova Fabrica" viene edificata demolendo parte dell'antica chiesa medioevale di San Benedetto, e i lavori si protraggono per ben 47 anni fra alterne vicende, sino al 1797, quando la chiesa viene finalmente completata ed inaugurata.
Recalled in ancient times as the Abbatial Church of San Benedetto, the presence of the Benedictine fathers in Frosinone bears witness, whose work in the city is ascertained prior to 1153 (1), or rather, according to some sources, the same church was built by the Cassinese order already before 1134. The medieval building remains the property of the regular clergy probably until 1250, when the parish church was erected there.
The ecclesial building, as we see it today, is the result of a "modern-style restoration" (as it was said in the eighteenth century), whose works begin the year 1750 under the direction of the archpriest Don Bernardino Di Dini. The architect's name is not known because the archival sources found show us only the names of the two "Superintendents of the nova Fabrica of said Church": the priests Filippo Ciceroni and Teodosio Sperandio; that what they wrote would seem to be the true architects of the design and construction of the new church.
The "nova Fabrica" was built by demolishing part of the ancient medieval church of San Benedetto, and the works lasted for 47 years between alternate events, until 1797, when the church was finally completed and inaugurated.
