★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Takes just over an hour to walk here from Matera. Be aware that there is a very steep hill to go down, then flat for a way, then steep incline again and another bit to climb to get to the site.
There are also caves around the area to explore by foot. The church is almost never open but there is a little church before you get to the main site that has a window in it so you can look in.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Church of Our Lady 'delle Vergini' : one of the most important monuments in Matera, comprises dozens of chambers carved into the tufa limestone over two floors. Chiesa di Madonna delle Virtù was built in the 10th or 11th century and restored in the 17th century.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Absolutely Breathtaking place.
Be prepared though:
Comfy shoes and if you gotta go by car as close as possible to the top (at the church) you gotta drive REAL SLOW or you’ll break your car.
Or else you can park it a bit before and walk your way there.
I was there close to sunset time and it was spectacular. Pictures do not give it justice.
The church only opens once a year, on the first Sunday of may. So do not expect for it to be open.
You go there for the view :)
