Chiesa evangelica è un termine generico usato dalle chiese protestanti storiche (luterane e riformate) per definire il proprio riconoscimento esclusivo dell'autorità della Bibbia, e in particolare dei libri del Nuovo Testamento, espresso dal principio Sola Scriptura. Nasce come forma di autodefinizione da parte delle chiese che hanno aderito alla Riforma protestante. A fronte del termine "protestante" (che fa riferimento alla protesta dei prìncipi e delle città che seguivano la dottrina di Lutero – protesta che prese corpo nella seconda Dieta di Spira contro la decisione di proibire qualunque riforma nelle istituzioni ecclesiastiche e, quindi, coglie le implicazioni storiche e culturali del movimento) il termine "evangelico" definisce un tratto teologico caratteristico comune a queste chiese. Di conseguenza, esistono chiese che si definiscono "evangeliche" senza però riconoscere alcun legame con le chiese protestanti storiche: se il protestantesimo è evangelico per eccellenza, ci sono tuttavia chiese evangeliche non protestanti[1]. Il termine "evangelico" si riferisce al Vangelo (l'evangelium, in greco: εὐαγγέλιον, euangélion, che significa "buona notizia"), inteso come dottrina di Gesù e degli apostoli tramandata nel Nuovo Testamento[2]. Esso fu utilizzato consapevolmente per marcare la centralità della rivelazione contenuta nel testo biblico, in contrapposizione alla dottrina della Chiesa cattolica, che ritiene il punto di riferimento, teologico e dottrinale, del credente debba essere, accanto alla Bibbia, anche la tradizione. Il significato del termine "evangelico" deve essere tenuto distinto dal relativamente nuovo concetto di evangelicalismo o evangelismo[3] (il termine proviene dall'inglese evangelical)[3], che indica un insieme di movimenti e denominazioni cristiane di origine protestante nato nei paesi anglosassoni nel XVIII secolo.[senza fonte].

It was born as a form of self-definition by the churches that adhered to the Protestant Reformation. The term "evangelical" refers to the Gospel (the evangelium, in Greek: εὐαγγέλιον, euangélion, which means "good news"), understood as the doctrine of Jesus and the apostles handed down in the New Testament [2]. It was used consciously to mark the centrality of the revelation contained in the biblical text, as opposed to the doctrine of the Catholic Church, which considers the theological and doctrinal point of reference of the believer, alongside the Bible, also tradition. The meaning of the term "evangelical" must be kept distinct from the relatively new concept of evangelicalism or evangelism [3] (the term comes from the English evangelical) [3], which indicates a set of Christian movements and denominations of Protestant origin born in the countries Anglo-Saxons in the 18th century.
