Notizie Storiche XI - XX (costruzione intero bene) La Chiesa di Santa Barbara, databile all’XI-XII secolo, fu una delle tre parrocchie di Rivello di rito greco e il 28 agosto 1372 fu associata alla parrocchia di San Nicola da Monsignor Nicolao, Vescovo di Policastro. Presenta un’abside semicilindrica, articolata in due registri. L’antica chiesa conserva affreschi risalenti al tardo ‘500. Sul lato sinistro della navata si può notare affrescata un’epigrafe datata 1581 e un dipinto raffigurante San Francesco di Paola del XVI secolo. A sinistra dell’abside è ubicato un crocifisso in legno scolpito e dipinto, opera di un artigiano del XIX secolo. Nell’abside sono affrescati i Dodici Apostoli e Cristo in gloria, probabilmente eseguiti dal pittore locale Antonio Aiello. A destra dell’abside è posta un’edicola, realizzata intorno al 1566, ove emerge la figura di un santo, forse San Marco; nell’ordine superiore è raffigurata l’Annunciazione, opera attribuita al pittore lucano Giovanni Todisco, e nel timpano è raffigurato l'Eterno Padre. Historical News XI - XX (whole building construction) The Church of Santa Barbara, datable to the 11th-12th century, was one of the three Greek rite parishes of Rivello and on 28 August 1372 it was associated with the parish of San Nicola by Monsignor Nicolao, Bishop of Policastro. It has a semi-cylindrical apse, divided into two registers. The ancient church preserves frescoes dating back to the late 1500s. On the left side of the nave you can see a frescoed epigraph dated 1581 and a painting of San Francesco di Paola from the 16th century. To the left of the apse is a carved and painted wooden crucifix, the work of a nineteenth-century craftsman. In the apse there are frescoes of the Twelve Apostles and Christ in glory, probably painted by the local painter Antonio Aiello. To the right of the apse there is an aedicule, built around 1566, where the figure of a saint emerges, perhaps San Marco; the Annunciation is depicted in the upper order, a work attributed to the Lucanian painter Giovanni Todisco, and the Eternal Father is depicted in the tympanum. Description The church with a single nave and semicircular apse preserves inside Byzantine frescoes of exquisite workmanship and the sixteenth century.
