★ ★ ★ ★ ★ In Summer 2017, with an on-site campaign/Summer School, we will kick-start the project "At the Crossroads of Empires: The Longobard Church of Sant'Ambrogio, Montecorvino Rovella (Salerno)". This project aims at setting an example for a fruitful collaboration between humanities and sciences towards a positive impact on the wider society.
Re-discovered in the 1970s under over-grown vegetation and debris, and partly excavated and restored in the 1990s but never properly studied, the still-standing early medieval rural church of Sant’Ambrogio at Montecorvino Rovella is largely unexplored by modern scholarship and unknown outside the local milieu. Erected in the countryside of Salerno, the former capital of southern Langobardia (Italy), in the ninth century, the church and its surroundings offer a unique case study of early medieval lay and religious culture. Its history displays clear links to Benedictine monasticism, the Papacy, the Frankish Empire, Byzantium, and transnational pilgrimage routes from the Holy Land to cult centres of St Michael on the European continent. Its evidence offers a wealth of material to a range of scholarly disciplines such as history, archaeology, archaeometry, genomics, medicine, computational biology, art history, conservation, management of cultural heritage, and community economics, with a great potential for impact.
