Dai documenti risulta che a Picerno nel 1310 esisteva già la parrocchia di San Nicola ed è probabile che ci fosse anche all’epoca alla quale risalgono gli affreschi della cripta, nel XII-XIII secolo. La cripta infatti dovrebbe essere la chiesa originaria sulla quale si è sviluppato, per aggiunte successive, l’attuale imponente complesso architettonico. Il suo primo impianto risale al 1611 ma era di dimensioni più limitate rispetto a quella attuale. A seguito del terremoto del 1694 l'impianto originario subisce notevoli danni che determinarono la decisione di abbattere quasi totalmente l'intera struttura. Fu ricostruita e ampliata nel 1727, con l’aggiunta del coro e della sacrestia, in un lavoro intenso che coinvolse tutta la popolazione del paese, talvolta intere famiglie, rendendo possibile l’ultimazione dei lavori in soli quattro anni. La data del 1728 incisa sull’architrave della porta laterale della chiesa attesta il termine dei lavori della ristrutturazione della chiesa, che si conclusero del tutto nel 1731. The church of S. Nicola was substantially built on the remains of an ancient medieval castle. From documents it appears that in Parerno in 1310 the parish of San Nicola already existed and it is probable that there was also at the time to which the frescoes in the crypt date back, in the XII-XIII century. In fact, the crypt should be the original church on which the current imposing architectural complex was developed by successive additions. Its first plant dates back to 1611 but was of a more limited size than the current one. Following the earthquake of 1694, the original plant suffered considerable damage which led to the decision to almost completely demolish the entire structure. It was rebuilt and enlarged in 1727, with the addition of the choir and sacristy, in an intense work that involved the whole population of the country, sometimes entire families, making it possible to complete the work in just four years. The date of 1728 engraved on the architrave of the side door of the church attests to the end of the renovation of the church, which ended completely in 1731.
