La chiesa di San Giovanni (ca. XV secolo) è stata costruita originariamente su un terrapieno e sulle mura della quadra di Mura, che impedivano ogni ulteriore passaggio da nord. Dalla costruzione a oggi si è assistito a numerose trasformazioni: basti pensare che, in principio, dall’attuale piazza Corte Mura vi si accedeva tramite una strada a gradoni che si interrompeva una volta giunti a livello del sagrato, all’ombra del Torrione. In seguito a vari rifacimenti, scomparvero poco dopo la strada a gradoni (divenendo l’attuale via Gorini collegata a piazzale Mazzini), il sagrato e il muraglione che lo racchiudeva, così come le mura che cingevano il complesso architettonico a nord. Anche nel Settecento si assistette a numerosi interventi architettonici che trasformarono l'interno della chiesa per come possiamo osservarlo oggi, allargandolo e ricomprendendo in esso la cappella del Suffragio (che costituiva inizialmente un ambiente separato). Inoltre, la chiesa venne sopraelevata di quasi il doppio della propria altezza originale, la facciata principale fu demolita e avanzata in direzione dell’antico sagrato, mentre il campanile, inizialmente posto a sud, venne decapitato e sostituito da uno più alto e sottile a nord. La chiesa è stata infine restaurata nel 1966.

The church of San Giovanni (ca. 15th century) was originally built on an embankment and on the walls of the Mura square, which prevented any further passage from the north. From construction to today, there have been numerous transformations: just think that, in the beginning, from the current Piazza Corte Mura it was accessed via a stepped road that was interrupted once you reached the level of the churchyard, in the shadow of the Torrione. Following various renovations, the stepped road (becoming the current Via Gorini connected to Piazzale Mazzini), the churchyard and the wall that enclosed it disappeared shortly after, as well as the walls that encircled the architectural complex to the north. Also in the eighteenth century there were numerous architectural interventions that transformed the interior of the church as we can observe it today, enlarging it and including in it the chapel of the Suffrage (which initially constituted a separate room). In addition, the church was raised almost twice its original height, the main facade was demolished and advanced towards the ancient churchyard, while the bell tower, initially placed in the south, was beheaded and replaced by a taller and thinner one in the north. . The church was finally restored in 1966.
