Fu edificata dai francescani nel 1245 e completato nel 1253, la chiesa si presenta con una pianta a croce Latina con tre navate.
In questa chiesa viene custodita la statua di Sant. ANTONIO da PADOVA.
E la seconda chiesa al mondo in ordine cronologico dedicato al culto di San FRANCESCO dopo l'omonima basilica di ASSISE.
Nel ª causa della vicinanza del fiume VELINO, per le sue frequenti esondazioni il pavimento fu rialzato di un paio di metri.
Dotata di un chiostro, questo oggi ospita la sede del liceo scientifico.
Il complesso comprende un convento (oggi adibito a sede del liceo) ci sono affreschi, il chiostro e in fase di ristrutturazione.
