Little gem a stone's throw from Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

It was built in 1309 by the Confraternita dei Battuti. Located in the homonymous square, it is enriched by various artistic works (fourteenth-century frescoes), as well as the stone portal and the splendid wooden Crucifix which gave the name to the sacred building, once attached, with the name of Santa Maria degli Angeli, at the city hospital.

The church is annexed to a Franciscan convent, very simple and very pretty. It is one of the very few churches that celebrate Mass at 10:00 in the morning and there are always some priests for confessions. It is located in the center of Pordenone and you can take advantage of the paid parking lots that are behind the convent. Attention to the parking on Wednesday and Saturday morning which is much more difficult due to the presence of the city market. The church of Santa Maria degli Angeli is also known as Chiesa del Cristo for the wonderful carved and polychrome crucifix, recently restored, which towers over the high altar, commissioned in 1446 by Giovanni Teutonico. The building, built in the fourteenth century, served as a chapel for the nearby hospice-hospital dedicated to Santa Maria degli Angeli, founded by the Battuti confraternity which had its headquarters right in front of the church entrance. The church still preserves numerous fourteenth-century frescoes of different workers and then of the early 16th century (Santa Barbara di Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo). The entrance portal, carved in Istrian stone, was commissioned by Pilacorte in 1510. In 1665 the building became the chapel of the monastery of the Augustinian nuns and, when they moved to the Dominican convent, around 1760, it became the hospital chapel. In 1760 it underwent various architectural changes that gave it its current neoclassical appearance: the rosette of the façade and the pointed windows were walled up, the hall was enlarged and the roof was raised. Serious structural damage to the property was caused by the bombardments of the Second World War, from which only the side walls were saved. The church was soon rebuilt and reopened for worship in June 1946 by the bishop Vittorio D'Alessi. In 1947 the artist Tiburzio Donadon painted the fresco of the Assumption on the ceiling, replacing the previous work by Pietro Venier, destroyed by the bombings. During the restoration works carried out between 1967 and 1968, a fascinating cycle of frescoes with a sacred theme was brought to light, dating back to the 14th century. Following the terrible earthquake that struck Friuli in 1976, the church underwent a further architectural restoration that restored the appearance that we can still admire today.
