★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This sports complex was known as the "Campi Americani" because, directly across Via Manzoni is a building that was previously a school for American military service personnel's children. The soccer fields were used by the students. Prior to that, in the early 1960s the building was used as the U.S. Navy Hospital, as part of the Naval Support Activity ("NavSuppAct 510" which was housed just down the hill on Via Michelangelo da Caravaggio). I served in that hospital from 1962 to 1964. It has now reverted to an apartment house, which was its original use.
