Il castello, posto sulla sommità di una collina, serviva a controllare il confine con il ducato di Napoli, con il principato di Capua e la via di comunicazione tra la Campana e la Puglia. Nell'XI secolo i Normanni lo restaurarono e lo dotarono di una seconda cinta muraria. Nel XV secolo venne devastato da due forti terremoti e cadde in rovina. L'eruzione del Vesuvio del 1631 pose fine all'utilizzo del castello che venne in parte spogliato per la costruzione del nuovo centro abitato di Avella. Visita interessante. In the 11th century the Normans restored it and endowed it with a second wall. In the 15th century it was devastated by two strong earthquakes and fell into disrepair. Poco prima di arrivare al castello c'è una stradina sterrata dopo poco c'è un piccolo piazzale e consiglio di parcheggiare lì l'auto. Castello grande e affascinante peccato solo per la poco cura del posto. Inoltre, è possibile ammirare un bel panorama. Castle located above the town of Avella. Shortly before arriving at the castle there is a dirt road after a while there is a small square and I recommend parking your car there. Large and fascinating castle, a shame only for the little care of the place. Furthermore, it is possible to admire a beautiful panorama.
M	Max Zinno on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Il castello di Avella, unico nel suo genere con Dongione circondato da due fila di mura risalenti rispettivamente ad epoca longobarda e normanna è un vero gioiello. Tuttavia ho l’impressione che il flusso turistico possa infastidire i villici del luogo avendo trovato il sito in stato di degrado ed abbandono alla mercé di tutti. Eppure pare che siano stati spesi tanti soldi per rivalorizzare la struttura ! 5 stelle al sito e una stella di gran vergogna all’amministrazione!!! Il castello, l’anfiteatro e la grotta di San Michele potrebbero rappresentare davvero una grande ricchezza per la comunità. However, I have the impression that the tourist flow may annoy the local villagers having found the site in a state of decay and abandonment at the mercy of all. Yet it seems that a lot of money has been spent to revalue the structure! 5 stars to the site and a star of great shame to the administration !!! The castle, the amphitheater and the cave of San Michele could really represent a great wealth for the community.
