★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Un sistema di fortezze e centri fortificati doveva esistere qui in età molto antiche, tenuto conto che a Pescopagano, Montecalvo e Cairano (località situate nel circuito di Conza) trovarono rifugio, dopo la battaglia del Volturno, i settemila Goti che si arresero poi a Narsete. Le notizie sicure sui primi feudatari abitanti del castello risalgono al 1164: al conte Gionata di Balvano. Più che di un vero e proprio castello si tratta di una roccaforte di cui è appena riconoscibile una struttura a torre in rovina. Oggi il castello, infatti, è poco più di un mucchio di suggestivi macigni, coperti di edere e di rovi, accessibile tramite un percorso risistemato solo di recente, da cui è possibile godere di una vista panoramica mozzafiato.
