Il sito di moneta ha origini risalenti al secondo secolo avanti Cristo quale colonia romana di Luni poi trasformata in castrum nel sesto secolo dai bizantini. Oggi La Rocca è proprietà del comune di Carrara che la acquistò dai Derville' con rogito a Parigi. Il castello si presenta oggi fortemente degradato. The castle of Moneta is a fortress located not far from the city of Carrara, in Tuscany. It dates back to 1035. The coin site has origins dating back to the second century BC as a Roman colony of Luni then turned into castrum in the sixth century by the Byzantines. Today La Rocca is owned by the municipality of Carrara who bought it from the Derville 'with deed in Paris. The castle is today strongly degraded.

Posto in posizione strategicamente favorita per il capillare controllo del Territorio circostante nei secoli passati. Il Panorama di cui si gode dalla collina posta a ridosso dell'abitato di Fontia é qualcosa di meraviglioso, la vista spazia delle Alpi Apuane ad Est, in linea d'aria diretta con la Foce del Pianza alla base del Sagro fino al Monte Brugiana che segna il confine con la città di Massa; mentre a Sud si ammira la vallata sottostante con l'abitato di Carrara e la linea costiera di Marina di Massa e Carrara. Luogo putroppo non curato a dovere e non valorizzato. Strada di accesso dissestata e di difficile percorrenza in auto. On the hills west of the city of Carrara stands what now remains of the Castello di Moneta. Placed in a strategically favored position for the capillary control of the surrounding territory in past centuries. The panorama enjoyed from the hill located close to the town of Fontia is something wonderful, the view sweeps across the Apuan Alps to the east, in a direct line of sight with the Foce del Pianza at the base of the Sagro up to Monte Brugiana which marks the border with the city of Massa; while to the south you can admire the valley below with the town of Carrara and the coastline of Marina di Massa and Carrara. Unfortunately, a place not properly cared for and not valued. The access road is rough and difficult to travel by car.

A feeling of order and peace. I recommend going up from the second round of the road to Fontia. Slightly sloping road ... about 30/45 minutes.

A	Alessandra Pennini on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Adoro questo posto, ci vado spesso a camminare, lungo tutta la passeggiata c'è sempre una bellissima vista su colline e mare, ma pure Alpi Apuane. I love this place, I often go there to walk, along the entire promenade there is always a beautiful view of the hills and the sea, but also the Apuan Alps.
E	Elena on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Il castello di Moneta in realtà non è completo, ciò che rimane sono solamente ruderi. Incantevole è il luogo, molto tranquillo e rilassante con un panorama eccezionale che spazia sul territorio di Carrara fino al mare. Si può raggiungere con un sentiero segnalato che parte dal paese di Fossola della durata di circa 45 minuti e si arrampica con buona pendenza per un tratto asfaltato con abitazioni poi nel secondo tratto bisogna proseguire a piedi per forza poiché il sentiero è stretto e sterrato. Un altro modo per raggiungere le rovine è passare sempre dal paese di Fossola ma prendendo la strada che prosegue fino ad arrivare a Santa Lucia e anche qui c'è un'indicazione sulla strada e non si può sbagliare. Il cammino è più corto e soprattutto meno faticoso adatto a tutti. Luogo consigliato. The castle of Moneta is actually not complete, what remains are only ruins. The place is enchanting, very quiet and relaxing with an exceptional panorama that sweeps across the territory of Carrara to the sea. It can be reached with a marked path that starts from the village of Fossola lasting about 45 minutes and climbs with a good slope for an asphalted stretch with houses then in the second stretch you have to continue on foot because the path is narrow and dirt. Another way to reach the ruins is to always pass by the town of Fossola but taking the road that continues until you reach Santa Lucia and here too there is an indication on the road and you cannot go wrong. The path is shorter and above all less tiring suitable for everyone. Recommended place.

Per la vista meriterebbe di essere restaurato,ma purtroppo qui in Italia e specialmente in Toscana camminiamo,calpestiamo e guardiamo "Storia" di conseguenza un posto così rovinato e quasi inaccessibile ( ho camminato in salita per circa 1,5 km?) è difficilissimo che verrà restaurato e messo in risalto come dovrebbe essere Ruins of a castle prey to nature and man. For the view it deserves to be restored, but unfortunately here in Italy and especially in Tuscany we walk, trample and look at "History" consequently a place so ruined and almost inaccessible (I walked uphill for about 1.5 km?) it is very difficult that it will be restored and highlighted as it should be

We stayed in a school at the bottom of the hill and trekked up every day. The neighboring people treated us like family because they were so happy to have us helping fix up their treasure. Massa Carrara's mayor and council made sure our off time was spent enjoying the best of their beautiful city. I certainly will never forget my experience with Castello di Moneta.
