Elemento fondamentale del sistema difensivo del borgo, fatto realizzare da Ludovico il Moro insieme alla cinta muraria per difendere la Valtellina dalla possibili incursioni dei Grigioni. L’ingegnere ducale Giovanni Antonio Amadeo rafforza il castello di Piattamala e costruisce il nuovo Castello di SantaMaria (il “Castelasc”) al quale viene attestata una cinta di mura che racchiude il borgo affiancandosi all’Adda. La denominazione di “Santa Maria” fu data perché furono demoliti ed inglobati nella cinta castellana l’antica chiesa omonima e l’annesso ospedale, esistenti almeno dal secolo XII. La fortificazione di Tirano ebbe importanza più civile che militare, salvo isolati episodi nel secondo decennio del Cinquecento e del Seicento, condizionando in particolare lo sviluppo urbano della città fino ai primi dell’Ottocento. I ruderi del castello e la torre sono stati recentemente restaurati dal Comune di Tirano. Castle of Santa Maria. Known as Castellaccio. A fundamental element of the defensive system of the village, built by Ludovico il Moro together with the walls to defend the Valtellina from the possible incursions of the Grisons. The ducal engineer Giovanni Antonio Amadeo reinforces the castle of Piattamala and builds the new Castle of SantaMaria (the "Castelasc") to which a wall is enclosed which encloses the village alongside the Adda. The name of "Santa Maria" was given because the ancient church of the same name and the annexed hospital were demolished and incorporated into the castle walls, existing at least since the XII century. The fortification of Tirano had more civil than military importance, except for isolated episodes in the second decade of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, influencing in particular the urban development of the city until the early nineteenth century. The ruins of the castle and the tower have been recently restored by the Municipality of Tirano.

Andrebbe forse valorizzato maggiormente ma merita di dedicarci una passeggiata per visitarlo. Dosso on which stand the ruins of the ancient castle of S.
