★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Transitando sulla litoranea, all'altezza di Amendolara (cs), si imbocca la comoda superstrada che risale la valle del fiume Ferro ed in pochi minuti si arriva ad Oriolo, importante borgo di antiche origini, con un bellissimo centro storico. Il Paese ti appare in lontananza, incastonato in un paesaggio roccioso e arroccato su uno sperone roccioso, dominato dal Castello.
Il Castello di Oriolo è una fortezza medievale dall'aspetto massiccio e poderoso, arroccata nella sommità centro storico.
È una struttura di forma quadrangolare, dotata inizialmente di quattro bastioni angolari, dei quali attualmente ne restano tre.
Eretto su una precedente costruzione verso la fine dell'alto medioevo, nel 1487 fu esaltato dal regio commissario della Contea di Lauria, Tommaso Filomarino, che lo definì molto importante dal punto di vista strategico-militare.
Nel 1265, era di proprietà di Carlo II d'Angiò e successivamente dei Sanseverino.
Dopo la rivolta dei baroni, il castello passò ai Pignone del Carretto, futuri marchesi di Oriolo e principi di Alessandria.
Nel 1647, fu assediato dai seguaci della rivoluzione di Masaniello.
L' 8 maggio 1813, vi nacque Giuseppe Pignone del Carretto ultimo sindaco della Napoli borbonica.

Built on a previous building towards the end of the early Middle Ages, in 1487 it was exalted by the Royal Commissioner of the County of Lauria, Tommaso Filomarino, who defined it as very important from a strategic-military point of view.
In 1265, it was owned by Charles II of Anjou and later by the Sanseverinos.
After the revolt of the barons, the castle passed to the Pignone del Carretto, future marquises of Oriolo and princes of Alessandria.
In 1647, it was besieged by the followers of the Masaniello revolution.
On 8 May 1813, Giuseppe Pignone del Carretto was born here, the last mayor of Bourbon Naples.
