★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This church has such a sad history. It was built after Venice had experienced the plague more than 60 times. Before Covid our guide told us people just said "meh" when she mentioned the word quarantine. Now in 2021 everyone says "oh, we know about that!!!" And we survived it. Covid has given this church a new meaning. We had and still have a plague with a new name. Though many lost their lives, we are thankful it wasn't as devastating as the plagues of hundreds of years ago.
The sculpture on the main altar shows the Virgin Mary in the center. The beautiful woman to her left is the city of Venice begging to have the plague driven out of Venice . The woman on the left represents the plague that Venice wants to be rid of.
The exterior of the church is currently being renovated but the church is open to visitors in October 2021.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This is just a magnificent piece of architecture rising out of the waters of Venice. It’s size is breathtaking! I think since St. Mark’s square is virtual adjacent to it, the long lines and crowds you see elsewhere are not as bad. At night, with a full moon, it is magical and mystical.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It was a great place. It remind us the black dead. Every year, there is a specific event to visit the church with the ceremony to recall people who died and to pray for health.
The Comune also build a temporary bridge for this event.
This year it was organized on Saturday and Sunday, the 20 and 21 of November.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Beautiful baroque church in Venice and, though centrally located it's a bit quieter around there than in many parts of Venice, so you can get away from the hustle and bustle. A great place to relax with magnificent views across Grand Canal and Giudecca Canal.
