A baroque church on a Greek cross plan, built in 1691-1728, which was built on the site of an earlier church from the 14th century. The church was founded by the Dominiaks. In 1948, Pius XII proclaimed it a minor basilica. The façade is divided into two rows by a balustrade decorated with flower trophies and statues placed on spherical pedestals, representing the visions of the prophet Ezekiel. The lower row is characterized by two columns on the sides that surround a large portal. On the sides of the portal, there are two niches in which there are stone statues of John the Baptist Blessed Francis of the Dominican Order. There is a statue of the Virgin Mary above the door; In the church there is the only carved stone pulpit in Lecce with a scene of the vision of the Apocalypse. Currently, the facade is under renovation.

I believe the Piazza del Duomo in Lecce is one of a kind. The Basilica presents well 2 facades, the one that sees when entering the square and one that should only be the main, visible once arrived at the end of the square. The bell tower is then detached from the Basilica. All this gives it atypical characteristics for a Church. The atmosphere that one breathes when visiting the square in the evening is certainly very suggestive and furthermore Lecce comes alive during the summer evenings.

Five Star chuch with One Star hours and comportment. The caretaker is an ignorant ass. "No photo"!!! " You can't stand there!" I felt like I was invading HIS church. Idiotic behavior. Plus, it is NEVER open, or nearly never open, a major problem in most of Lecce, sadly. I waited six months to finely get in, only to be treated like a three-year-old child. So much for promoting tourism, the only true growth industry for Lecce...which will never grow thanks to attitudes like this. Very sad...

This is one of the most beautiful churches in Italy we have ever visited and that's a high bar. Gorgeous exterior and numerous ornate side altars. Lecce comes alive at night and the piazza here is no exception. There was even a gentleman who push out a piano and was leisurely playing.
