★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Since the 1920s, with the development of the first US service stations , car washing was one of the most popular services for motorists.
The operations, of course, were all carried out manually, both as regards the actual washing of the cars and their drying. Between the late 1920s and the following decade, concrete "corridors" developed in the USA, in which a treadmill ran cars through pressure water jets operated by the attendant. At the end of the various steps, jets of hot air facilitated drying.
In the 1930s, similar washing "tunnels" also spread to Europe and Italy ; it was in Italy that the Turin-based company Emanuel introduced innovative mobile water jets, inside a machine that, with the use of chains, automatically moved the cars through the various washing phases.
Manual washing also experienced some innovations, with the development of special rooms inside service stations.
In the 1950s, more compact car washes appeared; still without brushes, they were moved manually on tracks and directed jets of water, air and soap onto the car, which was then cleaned manually.
With the introduction of the brushes, the entire process was finally automated in almost all its parts.
