Take the #10 bus from the bus station next to Matera Central(look for Red Building). Get ticket from the newsstand across the street for .80. Have a Google translate all set for the driver asking him to drop you off at the Avis office.
The woman at Avis is very helpful and speaks English.
You should reserve your car online to save $.
Book with Visa or Amex to waive the CDW.
Only rent a car in Italy if you can drive standards. If you are from the suburbs of America do not kid yourself into thinking you can drive in Italian cities. You will regret this.
