Road to the park is a bit nerve raçking, but it's worth the drive.

Fascinating history, truly a special place to visit. The sulphur mines and spring were especially unexpected and added an air of otherworldliness to the day’s adventure. Tread gently as many of the buildings are barricaded off for reconstruction, but that barely impacted our time

We were taken here by a friend that grew up in Anguillara. Roads a bit rough for a rome city car (depending on your clearance, might need to just slow it down) but worth the trek! If you park before the last gate, its a better walk along the last stretch. As I understand it, the history of Ancient Monterano goes back to the Bronze Age (~1500BC?). The Aqueduct dates back to the Etruscan era (~100BC?). The tower to (again as I understand it) ~1000AD, and the church and rebuilt tower to ~1600AD. The town was abandoned in the late 1700's after economic pressure, repeated malaria outbreaks, lack of water and sacking(s?) by the French Army. We came on a Tuesday and had the place to ourselves. Totally worth the trip!

Amazing place! Incredible views! We walked next to the river full of iron. Smell of eggs / fart everywhere, because of the gass ? Loved the little caves next to the cliff! Not mutch people there, so if you are looking for a quite hiking route with some historical monuments, its the place to go!

We discovered this place through the visit Lazio website and we privileged to enjoy a wonderful spring sunny day. The place is in the middle of nowhere but it's fantastic. Easy to get there!

Great place for a walk all year round. The 'ghost' town is on top of a hill and you can park nearby for easier access. We parked at a low level near the waterfall and walked up to the ruins. There are plenty of boards explaining what you can see and these are in Italian and English. There are some good views from the top. Do not ignore the rest of the area. You can follow a path next to the river down to an area which is volcanically active. There are bubbling springs and mud pools and a very strong sulphur smell. If you continue further down this trail it follows the valley but the landscape gradually opens up. If you are lucky (as we were) you will see a biancone (short toed eagle). There is enough shade around if it is a hot day but some of the walking is exposed. There are also picnic tables around, some quite remote so you can enjoy the peace, quiet and beauty of the area.
