La struttura, intitolata alla memoria del comandante Massimo Bovone, è dotata di una pista in erba lunga 640 m (TORA 640 m) con orientamento 03/21. L'aeroporto è gestito dall'Aeroclub di Alessandria ed effettua attività secondo le regole e gli orari VFR.
Nel 1916 il Regio Esercito decise di stabilire ad Alessandria un Aeroscalo per dirigibili. Fu innalzato un pilone d'ormeggio sul lato sud-est di quello che oggi è l'Aeroporto e fu costruito un hangar. Il pilone di attracco per i dirigibili è ancora oggi visibile mentre l'hangar venne smantellato al termine del primo conflitto mondiale.
Nel 1929 l'aeroporto, sotto l'egida del Reale Aero Club d'Italia, viene intitolato al Capitano pilota Giuseppe Motta di Quargnento. Dal 1958 è intitolato al Comandante Massimo Bovone.
La Scuola di Pilotaggio di Alessandria, insieme a tre sole altre scuole in tutti Italia, fu scelta dal 1985 al 1989, dall'Alitalia, come scuola di supporto per la formazione dei propri allievi.
Located north of the city, along Viale Milite Ignoto. The structure, named in memory of commander Massimo Bovone, is equipped with a 640 m long grass track (TORA 640 m) with 03/21 orientation. The airport is managed by the Alessandria Aeroclub and carries out activities according to the VFR rules and timetables.
In 1916, the Royal Army decided to establish an airship for airships in Alexandria. A mooring pylon was erected on the southeast side of what is now the Airport and a hangar was built. The mooring pylon for the airships is still visible today while the hangar was dismantled at the end of the First World War.
In 1929 the airport, under the aegis of the Royal Aero Club of Italy, was named after the pilot Captain Giuseppe Motta of Quargnento. Since 1958 it has been named after Commander Massimo Bovone.
The Pilotage School of Alessandria, together with only three other schools in all of Italy, was chosen from 1985 to 1989 by Alitalia as a support school for the training of its students.
