Giovanni in Argentella merita di essere riscoperta e salvata: gli affreschi medievali al suo interno rischiano di scomparire, distrutti dall'umidità e dall'abbandono, le murature sono in alcuni tratti a rischio di crollo. Un luogo così carico di storia e bellezza non può essere lasciato morire. A small jewel immersed in the Sabine olive groves. S. Giovanni in Argentella deserves to be rediscovered and saved: the medieval frescoes in its interior are in danger of disappearing, destroyed by humidity and abandonment, the walls are in some places at risk of collapse. A place so full of history and beauty cannot be left to die.

d	domenico colafrala on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Non è certa la data di fondazione così come il perché sulle sue origini, sull'uso della struttura, sull'interpretazione dei suoi affreschi ed altro ancora. Insomma un mistero per di piu complicato dal fatto che la struttura in epoche lontane ha subito molte modifiche. A titolo di esempio che significato ha il simbolo (=doppia croce greca) scolpito nella lunetta sopra il portale di ingresso? È legato alle sue origini oppure un richiamo all'ordine dei benedettini oppure è un richiamo ai cavalieri templari? L'abbazia ha una bellissima facciata di stile romanico ed è preceduta da un nartece. L'interno è a tre navate, non proprio simmetriche, ripartite da otto colonne. Quello che attira di più sono gli affreschi gotici, risalenti al trecento, che si trovano sulla navata destra. Le scene ritraggono alcuni cavalieri che seguono un principe, il duca di Aquitania, ed il santo Bernardino da Chiaravalle. Sullo sfondo è raffigurata la Pergola di Centurius di impronta cosmatesca. Nella navata centrale è posto un altare sopraelevato, dominato da un ciborio. Controllare date e orari per la visita, imperdibile. The foundation date as well as the reason for its origins, the use of the structure, the interpretation of its frescoes and more is uncertain. In short, a mystery moreover complicated by the fact that the structure in distant times has undergone many changes. By way of example, what does the symbol (= double Greek cross) carved in the lunette above the entrance portal mean? Is it linked to its origins or a reference to the order of the Benedictines or is it a reference to the Knights Templar? The abbey has a beautiful Romanesque facade and is preceded by a narthex. The interior has three naves, not exactly symmetrical, divided by eight columns. What attracts most are the Gothic frescoes, dating back to the fourteenth century, which are located on the right nave. The scenes depict some knights following a prince, the duke of Aquitaine, and the saint Bernardino da Chiaravalle. In the background is the Cosmatesque Pergola of Centurius. In the central nave there is an elevated altar, dominated by a ciborium. Check dates and times for the visit, not to be missed.

L	Luigi De Felici on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Un complesso abbaziale di notevole interesse storico-artistico, posto in una zona paesaggistica rilevante; il tutto è poco conosciuto e reclamizzato. Purtroppo si tratta nuovamente di un'occasione perduta da parte degli incompetenti enti e amministrazioni pubbliche preposte. Affidarene l'apertura a due volontarie, in sole due giornate disponibili e per poche ore, è la cifra esatta di quanta incapacità ci sia nel gestire il patrimonio culturale regionale, da parte delle istituzioni. An abbey complex of considerable historical and artistic interest, located in a significant landscape area; everything is little known and advertised. Unfortunately, this is again a lost opportunity on the part of the incompetent bodies and public administrations in charge. Entrusting the opening to two volunteers, in just two days available and for a few hours, is the exact figure of how much inability there is in managing the regional cultural heritage by the institutions.
V	Vincenzo Desiderio on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sono stato domenica scorsa a San Giovanni in Argentella. Sono un guida, ed ho accopagnato un gruppo in visita guidata. L'abbazia è un piccolo gioiello poco noto del Lazio, con una importante fase romanica, ma che cela tracce di una fase altomedievale e di un'insediamento romano. E' un posto di rara suggestione, così vicino a Roma. Ci sarebbero ancora delle migliorie da fare per renderla un posto ancora più gradevole: per esempio inserendo alcuni pannelli esplicativi, migliorando l'illuminazione, o musealizzando i numerosi reperti che oggi sono depositati alla base del campanile e ignorati dai non addetti ai lavori. Non è facilissimo visitarla, attualmente è aperta da volontari con orari stabiliti. Quindi consiglio di guardare bene il sito prima di avventurarsi. Comunque ne consiglio vivamente la visita! I was last Sunday in San Giovanni in Argentella. I am a guide, and I accompanied a group on a guided tour. The abbey is a little known jewel of Lazio, with an important Romanesque phase, but which conceals traces of an early medieval phase and of a Roman settlement. It is a place of rare beauty, so close to Rome. There would still be improvements to be made to make it an even more pleasant place: for example by inserting some explanatory panels, improving the lighting, or museumizing the numerous finds that today are deposited at the base of the bell tower and ignored by non-experts. It is not easy to visit, it is currently open by volunteers with set times. So I recommend that you take a good look at the site before venturing out. However, I highly recommend a visit!
