Un piccolo borgo di campagna con incastonata un'Abbazia di cui conosciamo la data precisa di fondazione, esattamente il 1001. A fondarla fu una donna, Ava dei Lambardi, signora di Montemaggio e della Val di Strove. Il toponimo, Isola, ci ricorda che fu fondata su un piccolo rilievo che sorgeva in un'antica palude, ora scomparsa. Qualche anno prima della fondazione passò da quel borgo Sigerico, che ne parlò nel suo resoconto del pellegrinaggio a Roma. Vi sono capitata per caso un mercoledì di marzo, intorno a mezzogiorno, e ho avuto la fortuna di trovare aperta la chiesa; nessuno era là, oltre me. Nella facciata sono i resti di un insolito portale doppio, dentro le tre navate, le colonne e i pilastri in pietra danno il senso di un luogo al di là del tempo. Una nota oscura di un tempo più recente: fu in questa chiesa che vennero portati e ricomposti i corpi di 19 ragazzi di vent'anni, partigiani sorpresi dai fascisti in un podere sul vicino Montemaggio e là trucidati il 28 marzo 1944. Place of charm on the route of the Via Francigena at the foot of Monteriggioni. A small country village with an Abbey set, whose exact date of foundation we know, exactly 1001. It was founded by a woman, Ava dei Lambardi, lady of Montemaggio and Val di Strove. The toponym, Isola, reminds us that it was founded on a small relief that stood in an ancient swamp, now disappeared. A few years before the foundation it passed from that Sigerico village, which spoke of it in its account of the pilgrimage to Rome. I happened by chance on a Wednesday in March, around noon, and I was lucky enough to find the church open; no one was there besides me. In the façade there are the remains of an unusual double portal, inside the three naves, the columns and the stone pillars give the sense of a place beyond time. An obscure note of a more recent time: it was in this church that the bodies of 19 boys of twenty were brought and reassembled, partisans surprised by the fascists in a farm on the nearby Montemaggio and there slaughtered on 28 March 1944.

Non mi sposterei di molto solo per vederla, ma è carina. If you go to see Monteriggioni you can go to see this abbey, it is just 5 minutes by car. I wouldn't travel far just to see her, but she's nice.

Il borgo che anticamente era un abbazia merita una visita. Interessante il chiosco e le "tinaie" in muratura delle vecchie cantine. La vista sul castello di Monteriggioni offre uno scorcio di Toscana poco conosciuta dal turismo. Intelligente e interessante la tabella che spiega la storia di questa struttura. An unknown and beautiful place, which could be kept much better and valued even more. The medieval church is huge. The village that was once an abbey is worth a visit. The kiosk and the "tinaie" in masonry of the old cellars are interesting. The view of the Monteriggioni castle offers a glimpse of Tuscany little known by tourism. The table explaining the history of this structure is intelligent and interesting.
M	Marco Minetto on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La chiesa, intitolata ai Santi Salvatore e Cirino, risale all’anno mille e fa parte di un complesso monastico benedettino, con gli altri edifici che si sviluppano attorno al chiostro, incastonato nel piccolo borgo, che in passato aveva l’aspetto di un’isola sicura tra le paludi ed i canneti che occupavano la piana. Il luogo, che nei secoli è stato punto di riferimento tra gli insidiosi itinerari percorsi da mercanti, pellegrini e viandanti, oggi è tornato ad essere una tappa ideale per i moderni pellegrini della Via Francigena. The church, dedicated to Saints Salvatore and Cirino, dates back to the year one thousand and is part of a Benedictine monastic complex, with the other buildings that develop around the cloister, set in the small village, which in the past had the appearance of a safe island between the marshes and the reeds that occupied the plain. The place, which over the centuries has been a reference point among the treacherous itineraries traveled by merchants, pilgrims and wayfarers, has now become an ideal stop for the modern pilgrims of the Via Francigena.
