Consiglio di dare sempre un'occhiata sul sito per vedere gli aggiornamenti sulle aperture, così da essere sicuri di arrivare e di poterla visitare anche dentro (la visita è gratuita). La si può raggiungere in bicicletta tramite una pista ciclopedonale che parte da San Giuliano Milanese, oppure, percorrendo alcuni tratti di strada, arrivando dall'altra bellissima abbazia di Chiaravalle.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Situata nella frazione di Viboldone, comune di San Giuliano Milanese, l'abbazia è stupenda. Provvista di parcheggio e aperta alle visite. La facciata ha un portale originale, una lunetta impreziosita da sculture eseguite da maestranze comacine (campionesi), un enorme rosone e due bifore aperte "sul cielo" (facciata "a vento", che attesta la transizione tra lo stile romanico e il gotico lombardo). Di probabile fondazione cistercense, divenne degli Umiliati (1176), fino alla loro soppressione a causa di un delitto. Nel 1348 l'edificio fu terminato e l'anno seguente furono realizzati i bellissimi affreschi la cui paternità è ancora da precisare. Certo è che attestano la diffusione dello stile giottesco in Lombardia e la nascita di un nuovo linguaggio locale, caratterizzato da un forte naturalismo. Le navate sono tre, tutte con volte a crociera affrescate e chiavi di volta diverse, con chiavi di volta molto interessanti.
In un angolino di un pilastro, in alto, ho individuato un piccolo " Fiore della Vita" scolpito, accanto a una croce "patente", mentre un bel Nodo di Salomone è affrescato in mezzo aI motivi floreali della prima campata destra. Una splendida "Madonna in trono e santi" del 1349, è opera di un artista toscano o lombardo; il "Giudizio Universale" è di Giusto de' Menabuoi, allievo di Giotto. Nell'ultima campata della navata si ammirano un' intensa "Crocifissione" e "Storie della vita di Cristo", affrescate da un artista lombardo e realizzate tra il 1360-1380 circa. Nella prima campata della navata destra si ammira una Madonna con Bambino, santi e un offerente del 1395 circa, attribuita a Michelino da Besozzo.
 Located in the hamlet of Viboldone, municipality of San Giuliano Milanese, the abbey is wonderful. Provided with parking and open to visits. The façade has an original portal, a lunette embellished with sculptures made by Comacine workers (from Campione), a huge rose window and two mullioned windows open "to the sky" ("wind" façade, which attests the transition between the Romanesque and Lombard Gothic styles ). Probably of Cistercian foundation, it became the Umiliati (1176), until their suppression due to a crime. In 1348 the building was finished and the following year the beautiful frescoes were created whose authorship is still to be specified. What is certain is that they attest to the spread of the Giottesque style in Lombardy and the birth of a new local language, characterized by a strong naturalism. There are three naves, all with frescoed cross vaults and different keystones, with very interesting keystones.
In a corner of a pillar, at the top, I identified a small carved "Flower of Life", next to a "patent" cross, while a beautiful Solomon's Knot is frescoed in the middle of the floral motifs of the first right bay. A splendid "Madonna Enthroned and Saints" from 1349, is the work of a Tuscan or Lombard artist; the "Last Judgment" is by Giusto de 'Menabuoi, a pupil of Giotto. In the last bay of the nave you can admire an intense "Crucifixion" and "Stories from the life of Christ", frescoed by a Lombard artist and made between about 1360-1380. In the first bay of the right aisle you can admire a Madonna with Child, saints and an offerer from around 1395, attributed to Michelino da Besozzo.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A well preserved abbey, with nice frescos inside the church where you can feel a spiritual quietness. It is located a few km away from the more famous Chiaravalle abbey, it's worth to drive a little more to visit both places on the same day-trip :-) The church is closed 12:30 - 2:30 pm.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A lovely stroll from San Giuliano Milanese to the Abbey.
Very green and shady. Not crowded, so quiet and pleasant. I went under the station underpass to get there. No public conveniences nor bars along the way but plenty on returning to San Giuliano Milanese.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A Green quiet walk or stroll on a Sunday morning before it gets too hot.
It's a bit sad to see so many structures boarded up and crumbling down. But well worth a visit, especially if you are interested in farm buildings from passed generations, or if you enjoy a quiet, peaceful stroll.
