È il Deposito Cavalli Stalloni, ex sede dell’Iriip (Istituto Regionale Incremento Ippico) di Foggia progettato dall'architetto Marcello Piacentini.
Quello che trasforma un semplice spazio in un luogo è l’abitare dell’uomo che crea storie e lascia tracce.
Inaugurato nel 1931 si estende su una superficie di 22 ettari , tra scuderie e pista di galoppo. Era la conclusione di un lungo iter avviato da tempo dalle Istituzioni cittadine per restituire a Foggia un ruolo derivante da una vocazione millenaria all’allevamento dei cavalli: il primo nucleo urbano, l’antica Arpi, era stata fondata dal mitico Diomede che aveva portato ai Dauni in dono dei poderosi cavalli dalla lontana Ellade.
Gli stalloni attualmente presenti sono circa 80, la maggior parte dei quali appartiene alle due razze autoctone tipicamente pugliesi: la cavallina delle Murge e l’asinina di Martina Franca, da alcuni anni individuate tra le razze a rischio di estinzione e, per questo motivo, sottoposte a particolare tutela.
Da alcuni anni sta procedendo alla mappatura genetica di tutte le fattrici e degli stalloni, punto di partenza di ogni selezione genotipica: molti esperti sono fermamente convinti che il cavallo murgese abbia tutte le qualità per poter diventare il cavallo nazionale italiano.
The "place of the heart" of the Foggia family
It is the deposit Horses Stallions, former headquarters of Foggia dell'Iriip (Regional Institute of Horse Increase) designed by Marcello Piacentini.
What transforms a simple space into a place to live is the man who creates stories and leaving traces.
Opened in 1931, it covers an area of 22 hectares, including stables and a gallop track. It was the conclusion of a long process started some time ago by the city institutions to give back to Foggia a role deriving from a millennial vocation to the breeding of horses: the first urban nucleus, the ancient Arpi, had been founded by the mythical Diomede who had brought to the Dauni as a gift of the powerful horses from distant Hellas.
The stallions currently present are about 80, most of which belong to the two typically Apulian native breeds: the Murge mare and the Martina Franca asinina, identified for some years among the endangered breeds and, for this reason, subject to special protection.
For some years now he has been proceeding with the genetic mapping of all the mares and stallions, the starting point of any genotypic selection: many experts firmly believe that the Murgese horse has all the qualities to become the Italian national horse.
