In the 19th century the town of Trieste was part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. At that time it was the most important civilian port of the country and it offered a lot of possibilties to expend trade and gain major economical profits. To achieve this it was decided to built a new railway line that would connect Vienna to Trieste. Later on, this line became known as the „Sudbahn“ or the Southern railway line. As part of this line, a railway station was built in Trieste, which was designed by Carl Ritter von Ghega, one of the most prominent Austrian railway engineers and architects. The Southern railway line was inagurated on 27.7.1857 and on that same day the new terminal train station of Trieste was officially opened in the presence of the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I. The new railway soon brought major economic development to the city, new trade routes were established and the city grew in its economic importance in the empire. But the newly built train station was relatively small and modest and was not enough to keep up with the new trends. So it was decided to replace the station with a newer, bigger, more elegant, and richly styled building, that we can still admire nowadays. The new station, which was designed by the Austrian architecht Wilhelm Ritter von Flattich in the Neo-Renaissance style, was inaugurated on 19.6.1878. The building was renovated in recent years, but nonetheless you can still feel and see the past splendor of this station, even if it was modernized. As soon as you step through its main entrance, you get almost captivated by the big and splendid hall in its interior. It is no surprise, that this hall was once called the Royal hall. It feels as a museum hall and not the interior of a railway station. The building also houses a ticket office, a central waiting area, a chapel, a bar, a bookshop, a pharmacy and also a large supermarket. There are also offices for the railway police and for Trenitalia and its management. Nowadays this is a station with all the modern facilities needed for the 6 million passengers that pass through here every year, but with the touch of an era long gone. Here you can catch a train for many destinations in Italy and Europe and of course you can still travel to Vienna too.?

What's the point of having direct connection to Vienna, if you're not selling tickets to Vienna and Ljubljana for ÖBB?

I really loved the refurbishment of the outside square and the under-passage, an advice: if your train is on the platform P.F you should go back to the square in front of the railway station as there is not train but a replacement bus

The station is clean and services were on time. There are shops and a caffè and even a supermarket inside the station... easy to buy tickets with or without assistance. There are toilets inside the station if you need...

Excellent small train station in Trieste, a city of 200k residents in northern Italy. It's a clean station that has a bookstore and even a grocer, so you can grab a few snacks and beverages before your journey. Very easy to navigate here. It was especially special to arrive at this station because my great-grandfather emigrated to the U.S. from Trieste in 1921. It's a beautiful train ride from Venice to Trieste, so keep your eyes off the screen and out the window!

Italian train station, built beginning of 20th century as headline for the Hapsburg South Rail (toward Italy), it maintains the original atmosphere even after still in the making restructuring. Note: for the sanitary conditions due to covid19 most of the shops inside have closed, and there is no sitting or waiting space inside, but only very few sitting outside and along the tracks.

Nice monument! Functionality of the station is in the "oh oh" side. There is a market shop which is open till 21:00. There is also a kiosk for newspaper, bus tickets and some candies. Beside that this is a ghost station.
