You can purchase tickets online or right from your car – drive in style - in the port (“buy ticket lane”). There is no time slot. You just buy a ticket and go whenever you feel like it or if there is space on the ferry.
Take the exit for the port on the highway and just follow the signs.
If you buy online make sure you create an account, since you need a qr code for check in. If you purchase without creating an account, you will only get a bar code and you have to get the qr ticket from one of the machines. Still line up at the “buy ticket lane” in the port to do that!
Otherwise, you have to walk back by foot, which is not recommended if there are many cars since you have to walk by and in between those to get to the ticket machines.
(If you purchased without an account, then created an account because you needed the qr code, you are sent a mail and are asked if you want to link the purchase to your account - then it should work out without walking/driving to the machines).

The whole process from payment to boarding is perfected.
Arriving at Messina, you inevitably end up in traffic.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ticket can be bought from machine or from the officer. You need to show the green pass to embark the ferry. Ticket price three days return trip for car is 46?, and for 3 months is 77 ? One way is 39 ?

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The self service automats work awfully as you enter the gate closes behind and infront of your car and you can't leave until you haven't bye the ticket. You can't even change the language...!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We booked our tickets for this ferry a few month in advance online. Since we needed the license plate number of our car, that was a bit of a problem, since we didn't know the plate number at the time, because we would have a rental car.
But the office was very helpful and helped me out (via E-Mail). They did a reservation for me and sent me everything by mail (PDF). Good and fast communication and friendly staff.
On the day we took the ferry we just traded our print-out papers for a ticket at the ticket booth (for cars). Quick and easy.
Boarding was very fast, Ferries cross about every 15-20mins in peak times. The ferries come in different sizes. From the simple one-level open ferry to multi-level ferries.
There is a kiosk on board, in case you're hungry. They got pretty decent arancini for fair prices. The ride is very quick. In 20min you arrive on the other side. Debarking was another quick and easy matter.
So we were very happy with Caronte. Everything went smooth, prices for a car (two ways) are fair for about 76 Euros. I'd use this service definitely again.

We booked our tickets on the internet and received it via email. So when we got there we drove up to a manned gate. We did this since we didn't know how it worked and hadn't got any information. The man in the gate told me that I needed to print my tickets in a machine that was some 20 meters back. Then he told me to drive through, park the RV and walk back.
Big mistake!
The ticketing machine had a sensor in the ground so without a car it didn't operate. Luckily another car drove up and the driver was kind enough to stay over the sensor, after printing his own ticket, so I could extract ours. After all this I could walk back to our RV and continue.
What about some printed information in the email conversation?
