A me ricorda i mausolei tardo bizantini. In origine credo avesse una pianta a croce greca.
E' comunque un luogo molto importante della nostra storia e religione che potrebbe sollevare molto interesse.
Built by Teodolinda to withdraw from public life in the place where he would leave his mortal remains, before being buried in his Monza. The church that perhaps was born as a defensive tower between the Valsassina and the Lake of Lecco, is modified many times and in different styles, resulting in what is unusual.
A single span with 7 side chapels that could remember the 7 churches of the Apocalypse, under an enormous elongated octagonal dome, supported by powerful buttresses, pilasters and hanging arches. It reminds me of the late Byzantine mausoleums. Originally I believe it had a Greek cross plan.
It is however a very important place in our history and religion that could raise much interest.

β β β β β Chiesa imponente in una grande piazza. A pochi passi da un parcheggio ampio e sul sentiero del Viandante.
Imposing church in a large square. A few steps from a large car park and on the Wayfarer's path.

β β β β β Dedicated to St. Martin of Tours, the Church is mentioned in the Liber Notitiae Sanctorum Mediolani (late 13th century) inside the parish Church of Varenna. From 1406 it is the seat of a provost and representative of the Pieve di Perledo. With the Renaissance Perledo even came to assume vicarious authority over its old capopieve (Pieve di Varenna). The parishes of St. Victor on the Castle (San Vittore sul Castello) at Esino Lario and the parish of St. George at Varenna were subjected to the defenses of Perledo, at the beginning of the 14th century, for an inaccurate period of time. The parish of Esino was later detached from Perledo in 1455. In the same year the pastoral visit of Archbishop Gabriele Sforza was recorded. In 1564 the "rectory" of St. George and the "chapel" of St. John the Baptist of Varenna were attested in 1564 in the parish Church of Perledo.
The wooden baptistery of the seventeenth century and two confessionals probably of the same workshop placed at the entrance; a discrete Mystic Marriage of St. Catherine by Domenico Cadorado (on the left altar); the altar of the Our Lady of Rosary with the decades of the 15 Mysteries (obviously without the Luminous Mysteries), work of the second seventeenth century; the cupboards of the sacristy; where there is also a painting with St. Martin and the poor, referring to Francesco Bellati dating back to 1785, and coming from the Chapel of the Saint. Between 1614 and 1628 the Church was reconstructed with an octagonal plan and in 1755 the façade was affixed in its tripartition and in the complex example of the minor Baroque building, but destined fatally to interrupt the rhythm of the building front.
In the Eastern Lario, Andrea Spiriti traces the bell tower to the 11th-12th century.

β β β β β Nice church dating back to late 13th century and refurbished in early 1600.
Interesting paintings inside: a noticeable Marriage of S.Caterina recently restored, on the left side; a Serassi organ on the right (in poor conditions but still working).
And do not miss the breath-taking view of the lake from the small square in front of the church.
