★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I primi abitatori delle "terre de la Cava", furono i Tirreni, o Etruschi, per cui il 27 agosto 1862 l'amministrazione comunale cambiò il nome della città in Cava de' Tirreni. Ai Tirreni era attribuito da Strabone (Geografia V,4,13) il porto di Marcina, identificato con Vietri che, con Cetara e Fonti, all'epoca facevano parte del territorio comunale. I reperti pre-romani custoditi nel museo della Badia Benedettina sono in realtà pervenuti da altri siti, frutto di collezionismo archeologico degli abati nei secoli passati. Reperti attribuibili alle fasi insediative pre-romane, recuperati da fortuiti ritrovamenti in età moderna citati dagli storici locali, sono andati dispersi. I resti archeologici più antichi di frequentazione del territorio risalgono i ogni caso al IV-III sec. a.C.
 The first inhabitants of the "terre de la Cava" were the Tirreni, or Etruscans, so on 27 August 1862 the municipal administration changed the name of the city to Cava de 'Tirreni. The port of Marcina was attributed to the Tyrrhenians by Strabone (Geography V, 4,13), identified with Vietri which, with Cetara and Fonti, at the time were part of the municipal territory. The pre-Roman finds kept in the museum of the Benedictine Abbey are actually received from other sites, the result of archaeological collecting by abbots in past centuries. Finds attributable to the pre-Roman settlement phases, recovered from fortuitous finds in the modern age mentioned by local historians, have been lost. The most ancient archaeological remains of frequentation of the territory date back to the IV-III century. B.C.
