Gli chiese di cercare nella cava di tufo un Simulacro nascosto dai cristiani lilibetani (che lì si rifugiavano per sfuggire alla persecuzione di Leone III e Costantino VI), e su quel luogo erigere una chiesa. Dopo quattro anni di scavi – durante i quali il frate fu accusato di essere un visionario – la statuetta, una piccola scultura di 18 cm, venne alla luce nel 1518. Era il 19 gennaio, la data ora dedicata alla “Patrona di Marsala”. Successivamente smarrita, fu ritrovata nel 1943 tra le macerie della chiesa rasa al suolo durante la II Guerra mondiale. Una vasta documentazione testimonia i molti miracoli che si verificarono dopo il ritrovamento dell’immagine. Addirittura, si narra che riacquistò la parola lo stesso sordomuto che materialmente la ritrovò. Morirono più di 300 persone nel rifugio della villa del collegio e tante altre in tutta la città che fu sfregiata dalle bombe americane e inglesi, risorgendo poi antifascista ed insignita di medaglia d'oro al valore civile. Si salvò la statua della Madonna della Cava e fu considerato un miracolo dalla popolazione, visto che la chiesa era completamente crollata. Dopo la guerra pur sempre nel sito fu collocata nella struttura riconsacrata adibita al culto e la Madonna divenne il simbolo e la patrona della città di marsala. Suggestiva la grotta che va assolutamente visitata nel contesto della chiesa, poi se avete la possibilità di seguire la messa celebrata dal rettore Don Antonio Civello veramente toccante e molto trascinante le sue belle omelie ?????? Nell’ottavo secolo ebbe origine infatti il movimento iconoclastico secondo il quale le immagini sacre non potevano essere oggetto di venerazione e rappresentazione e l’imperatore Leone III Isaurico promulgò un editto con il quale ordinava la distruzione di tutte le immagini sacre.
