G	Giada Pupa on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Molto carina la chiesa. Suggestiva la cripta. Il museo.. è un po’ scarno ma visto che uno ci si trova lo può anche vedere. Gentili e disponibili i signori del book shop. The church is very pretty. The crypt is suggestive. The museum .. is a bit sparse but since one is there, one can also see it. The gentlemen of the book shop are kind and helpful.
A	Alessio Guiggi on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Un bel monastero, fondato nella seconda metà del VIII secolo per volere del re longobardo Rachis. Secondo la tradizione la decisione fu presa a seguito dell'apparizione della Trinità sulla sommità di un albero...la verità era un preciso disegno politico di Rachis finalizzato alla protezione ed al controllo dei traffici lungo la via Francigena. L'edificio è in sobrio stile romanico, probabilmente il primo del genere nel senese. La facciata è alta e stretta, affiancata da due torrioni uno dei quali incompiuto. Pregevole al suo interno il "Christus Triumphans", un crocifisso ligneo policromo del XII secolo. Per quasi mille anni l'abbazia ha custodito il "Codex Amiatinus" (oggi conservato presso la Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana di Firenze) che è la più antica copia manoscritta conservata integralmente della Bibbia nella versione latina redatta da San Girolamo. Bellissima e suggestiva la "cripta", un ambiente caratterizzato da un'armonica alternanza di colonne con archi e volte a crociera in un disegno architettonico raro per l'epoca storica a cui risale. Vi sono 35 colonne (di cui 24 originali) di forme diverse e ricche di motivi vegetali e figure zoomorfe o simboliche. Interessantissime quella con il "nodo gordiano" e quella "storica", nel cui capitello sono raffigurate 4 teste forse dei fondatori dell'abbazia. A beautiful monastery, founded in the second half of the eighth century at the behest of the Lombard king Rachis. According to tradition, the decision was taken following the appearance of the Trinity on the top of a tree ... the truth was a precise political design by Rachis aimed at the protection and control of traffic along the Via Francigena. The building is in a sober Romanesque style, probably the first of its kind in the Sienese area. The facade is tall and narrow, flanked by two towers, one of which is unfinished. Inside there is the "Christus Triumphans", a polychrome wooden crucifix from the 12th century. For almost a thousand years the abbey has kept the "Codex Amiatinus" (now preserved in the Laurentian Library in Florence) which is the oldest fully preserved handwritten copy of the Bible in the Latin version written by San Girolamo. The "crypt" is beautiful and evocative, an environment characterized by a harmonious alternation of columns with arches and cross vaults in a rare architectural design for the historical period to which it dates back. There are 35 columns (24 of which are original) of different shapes and rich in plant motifs and zoomorphic or symbolic figures. The one with the "Gordian knot" and the "historical" one, in whose capital are depicted 4 heads, perhaps of the founders of the abbey, are very interesting.
