★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Per quanto riguarda la storia dei Carmelitani Scalzi, il primo abito fu confezionato dalla stessa Santa Teresa di Gesù e dalle sue monache ed il primo religioso ad indossarlo fu S. Giovanni della Croce nel 1568 a Duruelo. L'abito era sostanzialmente uguale a quello dei Carmelitani, solo era più stretto e con un tessuto più grezzo e ruvido. Era segno di una vita più stretta e di maggior penitenza. Nei primi tempi i religiosi andavano completamente scalzi (da qui il nome di "scalzi"), poi fu permesso di portare delle semplici "alpargatas", cioè grezzi sandali di sparto, e successivamente, nel 1605, la Congregazione Italiana introdusse i sandali di cuoio, chiusi all'altezza dei talloni.
