G	Giuseppe Pagano on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Sul finire degli anni '50 l'allargamento del cantiere navale Cassaro porta alla demolizione della Porta Grazia, monumentale e artistico accesso alla Cittadella. La porta fu rimontata in cima alla gradinata di Piazza Casa Pia dove si trova tutt'oggi. Il nome di questa splendida porta barocca deriva da una preesistente chiesa che si dovette abbattere per far posto alla Cittadella. La porta ad arco è ornata da tre mascheroni grotteschi (quelli laterali reggevano il ponte levatoio) in marmo, mentre il resto della struttura è in calcare. Due pilastroni incorniciano la porta vera e propria sormontati da ricchi capitelli e ghirlande. Ai lati due grandi finestre ottagonali, riccamente ornate, racchiudono la porta. Nella prospettiva auspicabile di un recupero della parte restante della Cittadella, troverebbe certo migliore collocazione nella sua originale dimora. At the end of the 1950s the widening of the Cassaro shipyard led to the demolition of the Porta Grazia, a monumental and artistic access to the Citadel. The door was reassembled on top of the steps of Piazza Casa Pia where it is still today. The name of this splendid Baroque door derives from an existing church that had to be demolished to make room for the Citadel. The arched door is adorned with three grotesque masks (the lateral ones held the drawbridge) in marble, while the rest of the structure is in limestone. Two pillars frame the actual door surmounted by rich capitals and garlands. At the sides two large octagonal windows, richly decorated, enclose the door. In the desirable perspective of a recovery of the remaining part of the Citadel, it would certainly find a better place in its original home.

La Porta fungeva appunto da ingresso principale per la Real Cittadella, costruita dagli spagnoli alla fine del ‘600 in quella che oggi è conosciuta come Zona Falcata. All’epoca Messina, posta in una posizione geograficamente strategica per il controllo economico-militare sul mar Mediterraneo, era già difesa su tutti i fronti da tre forti (Gonzaga, Castellaccio e Matagrifone). Infatti nell’ottica della corona spagnola, la costruzione non avrebbe avuto soltanto una funzione di difesa dai nemici esterni alla citta, ma anche, e forse soprattutto, da quelli interni.
