★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Messina is a dump, full if graffiti and trash. We saw 3 burned out cars. Somebody probably didn't pay their protection fee.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Having been on numerous cruises this is the most disappointing port visited. The experience starts with street vendors hassling you as you leave the port gates, continues through dirty streets and unkempt park and to top it off there is very little to see in the town anyway (apart from pick pockets)

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Bluest sea I've seen. Military navy is fun to see, but the sea-side walkway is restricted from regular pedestrians, so there will be a fence and some metres of sidewalk between you and the sea. Not a highlight.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ One of the better ports on the Med cruise circuit. Where the ships dock is right by the old area.of the town meaning you don't have to get involved with shuttle buses. Local police seem to have the dockside hustlers well under control.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ There really isn't much to do in Messina, when you arrive on a cruise, because of the limited time you have. But the square and many places are walking distance from the port. I don't suggest any excursions the cruise line offers, but I do suggest you get on one of the Red Bus and let it show you around town. Less costly too.
