D	Don Giuseppe Marino on Google ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ La Pieve di San Vitale martire e San Giovanni Battista è situata in una grossa frazione sul piano del Comune di Massa, Mirteto, alle pendici delle colline del Candia. Il primo documento che indirettamente la attesta risale al 16 gennaio 986. La chiesa, riporta la doppia intitolazione di San Vitale e di San Giovanni Battista, eco della dominazione bizantina, dell'acquisizione delle funzioni di pieve battesimale e anche per il forte influsso longobardo della vicina Lucca, attestato inoltre dalla presenza nella chiesa di una copia del celebre Volto Santo tuttora conservato nella Cattedrale lucchese. San Vitale è l'unica superstite delle tre antiche pievi del massese. La chiesa attuale non è quella del X secolo, memoria della rifondazione e della nuova consacrazione del tempio è conservata in una lapide marmorea, attualmente situata nella cappellina feriale, nella quale si afferma che la pieve venne solennemente consacrata e reintegrata nel pieno delle proprie funzioni il giorno 20 di ottobre dellanno 1759, ad opera del vescovo di Luni Sarzana Giulio Cesare Lumellini. Entrando nella chiesa, ed iniziando da sinistra in senso orario, si contano, assieme al centrale, ben sette altari. Da segnalare l'area battesimale dove oltre l'antico fonte si conserva la tela dedicata al Volto Santo di Lucca. L'affresco del Battesimo del Signore sulla parete attigua all'ingresso sulla sinistra. L'altare maggiore sormontato da un prezioso Crocifisso in marmo di Carrara e dalle statue di S. Giovanni Battista (sinistra) e San Vitale (destra). In presbiterio sono custodite due statue che ricordano l'Annunciazione del Signore da parte dell'Arcangelo Gabriele alla Vergine Maria. Di pregio anche la bella tela dedicata alla B.V. Maria del S. Rosario, restaurata nel 2011. Il 25 Aprile 2013 la Pieve è stata chiusa e dichiarata inagibile. Problemi di instabilità alle fondamenta e il crollo di parte del tetto, hanno compromesso la sicurezza dell'edificio. nel febbraio 2014 un fulmine ha danneggiato la cuspide del campanile. Il 26 settembre 2015 dopo importanti lavori di ristrutturazione è stata riaperta la Pieve! The parish church of San Vitale martyr and San Giovanni Battista is situated in a large hamlet on the plain of the Municipality of Massa, Mirteto, on the slopes of the hills of Candia. The first document that indirectly attests it dates back to 16 January 986. The church, reports the double title of San Vitale and of Saint Giovanni Battista, echo of the Byzantine domination, of the acquisition of the functions of baptismal parish and also for the strong Longobard influence of the nearby Lucca, also attested by the presence in the church of a copy of the famous Holy Face still preserved in the Cathedral of Lucca. San Vitale is the only survivor of the three ancient Massese churches. Entering the church, and starting from the left in a clockwise direction, there are, together with the central, seven altars. To note the baptismal area where beyond the ancient source the canvas dedicated to the Holy Face of Lucca is preserved. Giovanni Battista (left) and San Vitale (right). In the presbytery there are two statues that recall the Annunciation of the Lord by the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary. The beautiful painting dedicated to the B.V. Maria del S. Rosario, restored in 2011. On 25 April 2013 the Pieve was closed and declared unfit for use. Problems of instability at the foundations and the collapse of part of the roof have compromised the safety of the building. in February 2014 lightning damaged the bell tower cusp. The Pieve was reopened on 26 September 2015 after major renovations!
