I had a cooling problem with my car (a part needed changing under the hood, no big deal really) and since it was in close proximity to the place i was staying (went on holiday to Italy) decided to take it there on the suggestion i was given by my host. I don't speak any Italian, so translation was done by my host. All in all i took the car there on a friday afternoon, went there to talk about the problem in saturday morning and received the car in thursday afternoon. If i understood correctly they charged me 4 hours of labor for a job that the brand dealership would have done in 1 hour (people in the forums do it in 20–30 minutes and they can't all be trained mechanics). When i stated that, the boss said that it took exactly that many hours as he said and i can call the lawyer if i don't like it (pretty convenient to say that to a foreigner – second to last day in that town). Next when i asked why the bill is nearly 400€, he stated that they also had to clean the radiator with some special liquid. Whether it was special or not, the whole procedure took another 4–5 hours. The part that was changed was charged at 45€, delivery at 30€ (allegedly from Rome). Very curiously rounded up numbers. Also the dealership quoted me for less than 33€ (including VAT). Delivery from Rome for 30€ took from Saturday until Wednesday. Call it whatever you like, in Northen Europe/Baltics that sort of money gets you the part the next working day. No matter where you are. Also 40€ for the coolant (the car takes ~9 litres) – a 5 litre canister costs less than 20€ which is diluted with distilled water, which is less than 5€. So quite a lot of air in the prices. Or they got ripped themselves, but for a car repair shop, that seems unlikely. Also it seemed that since i payed in cash, they didn't pay any taxes on the bill they quoted me for. Also i later discovered that 2 rubber pieces were missing under the hood and some hoses were misplaced quite badly. For that sum i would expect everything to be perfect. But before i even got to the point where i paid 400€ and when i went there without my host he quoted me for 1000€. 20 min later with my host he said between 300–400€. Interesting. Wanted me to feel better about the 400€ bill? And if i undertood correctly, that was before they said anything about cleaning the radiator. So it seemed that since i was from a foreign country and far away, they can charge me for 400€ no matter what. What else was i going to do? Leave the car in Italy and leave on foot or by plane? 2 stars for being close to me and getting the car fixed. The total bill felt like a bad joke, though.
