Trovo che sia un sito di straordinaria bellezza scenografica, naturale e selvaggia, infatti non a caso è stato un luogo scelto anche per molti set cinematografici tra cui Ben-Hur, il Marchese del Grillo, Guardie e Ladri... Sorge in epoca etrusca, dominata in un secondo tempo dai Romani dei quali si possono ammirare molte opere come il monumentale Acquedotto, ed infine la vediamo cadere sotto il dominio longobardo per poi rinascere in età medievale diventando Ducato di importanti famiglie papali, come Orsini e Altieri. In epoca barocca si vede all'opera addirittura il famoso G. L. Bernini nella costruzione della Chiesa, del Convento e del Palazzo con la meravigliosa fontana del Leone. Lo splendore stesso di Monterano coinciderà con la stessa lenta ma avvenuta decadenza purtroppo (1770), a causa della malaria e dell'assalto delle truppe francesi. L'antico borgo fantasma è nella Riserva Naturale di Monterano, un luogo molto suggestivo dove si possono ammirare oltre le rovine, ampie vallate, folti boschi, animali al pascolo, cascatelle e ruscelli. Famosa e imperdibile è la Cascata della Diosilla tanto spettacolare con i suoi colori che variano dal giallo ruggine, al blu e bianco. Senz'altro è una gita fuori porta da non perdere assolutamente! It is one of the most exciting places in Lazio, with its ancient ruins, today it appears to us as the mysterious "ghost town". I find it a site of extraordinary scenic beauty, natural and wild, in fact it is no coincidence that it has also been a place chosen for many film sets including Ben-Hur, the Marquis del Grillo, Guards and Thieves ... It was built in the Etruscan era, later dominated by the Romans, of whom you can admire many works such as the monumental Aqueduct, and finally we see it falling under the Lombard dominion and then reborn in the Middle Ages becoming a Duchy of important papal families, such as Orsini and Altieri . In the Baroque period, the famous G. L. Bernini can even be seen at work in the construction of the Church, the Convent and the Palace with the marvelous Lion fountain. The very splendor of Monterano coincided with the same slow but unfortunately occurred decline (1770), due to malaria and the assault of French troops. The ancient ghost village is in the Monterano Nature Reserve, a very suggestive place where you can admire, beyond the ruins, wide valleys, thick woods, grazing animals, waterfalls and streams. Famous and unmissable is the Diosilla Waterfall, so spectacular with its colors ranging from rusty yellow to blue and white. It is certainly a trip out of town not to be missed!
