Dal 1966 è una presenza viva, vivace e fondamentale per la città, ma con respiro regionale e internazionale grazie alle monumentali pubblicazioni scientifiche e al convegno annuale di novembre che porta a Gorizia studiosi e docenti universitari di tutta Europa. L'Istituto ebbe il suo punto di partenza con la straordinaria presenza di Giuseppe Ungaretti in visita a Gorizia e sul Carso nel 1966, nel ricordo dei suoi anni da soldato sul fronte dell'Isonzo, il quale, fin dalla dedica lasciata al neo costituito ente, ne diede il programma informatore e fondativo di tutti i successivi decenni.
