★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Incredible find in the Dorsoduro section of Venice. This is an ancient monastery and there are still nuns living here. It has a wonderful feel to it and there is a large central courtyard which is an area of refuge, peace and tranquility in the heart of Venice

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We stayed at Instituto Canossiano for one night while visiting Venice. It was a little spartan but hey, it's a convent, you are there for the experience. It was very clean, quiet and enjoyable. The location was relatively easy to find for Venice and it was an easy walk to everything we went to see. I would recommend using Google Maps to navigate around Venice. The Nuns that guard the lobby :) -buzz you in the front door- are very pleasant and helpful but do not speak English. We arrived earlier than official check in time and the young lady (non- Nun) that checked us in spoke English very well and got us squared away. They let us store our bags while the room was readied and we went exploring. We returned late in the evening after the check in person had gone home and were buzzed in by the Nun on duty with a friendly wave.Although not Italian speakers, We were able to communicate that we belonged there through broken Italian and English and needed to pick up our key. Everything worked out fine and we got our key and directions to the room. We laughed about it with the same Nun the next day. The room was neat and clean with twin beds and terrazzo floors as you would expect to find in a convent. There are bathrooms in the rooms. There is internet in the front lobby and community kitchens on all the floors if you want to bring some food back. There is a curfew of Midnight when they lock the front door. If you need the Ritz Carlton this is not for you, but if you want to be closer to the culture and enjoy a little different experience I would highly recommend.
