β β β β β We rented a VW T6 California for two weeks at Indie Campers. We really enjoyed our trip and the camper.
Communication with Indie Campers went smoothly. They picked us up at the airport at the desired time. Please note that it takes some time till you are on the road, there is a lot to explain about the camper.
The VW T6 California is a nice and compact camper. The bed on the roof is quit comfortable, the bed in the van is really hard. It would be comfortable using the camper for two.

β β β β β Experience with Indiecampers in Italy is extremely terrible.
Terrible car retrieval and drop off time. The company only allowed us to retrieve the campervan in the afternoon and only by evening will then paperwork can only be completed. Thatβs not all, the retuning of the van is in the morning from 9-11am... .Wasted 1 day of the duration of the rental of the van just because of their inappropriate van rental and drop off time.
Upon reaching their office to do their paperwork, the company has an extremely pathetic insurance coverage that is mandatory for Drivers to pay. First insurance: pay a deposit of 1999euros which covers roadside assistance...and thatβs all. Second insurance: it covers the exact the same( roadside assistance) and nothing else but with more money. Also, itβs mandatory for drivers under the age of 25 to get this insurance instead of the first one. The insurance is complete rubbish, most probably is to cheat people money. The other two remaining insurance scheme( which is obviously more expensive) only cover 1 broken side window,1 broken tyre. (Not inclusive of scratches)
Dishonest and rude employees: do not hesitate to charge us for breaking the side mirror despite being there already since the beginning. The employee lied about the broken side mirror even so we told them repeatedly about it being there in the beginning. He further lied that he went to check the documents and called his colleague about the broken mirror and insisted that it was not there and wanted to charge us. (if not for my video recording of the spoilt mirror during the hand over, he could have already charged us for something we did not do.)Such dishonest and terrible employees that work together to cheat people. Also, during the returning of the van, the company would thoroughly check all the scratches with much more caution compared to the initial checks during the retrieval of the van, making sure that the company is surely able to at least charge us for something.
Still able to rent out the van despite many broken facilities and electrical circuit problems in the van: water pump fail to work , leaking tap water, unclean utensils with Moulds, broken light USB, spoilt charging point and fused plug. Also, the company gave us so many damaged
Inappropriate car advertisement: the company vans all have their advertisement all over their van. The advertisement were pasted with inappropriate stickers that attract robbers that will most likely break into the van to steal the luggages

β β β β β Two week hire mid August.. Incredible adventure across central Italy. Two adults and two kids in the smaller of the vans, cosy, but not cramped. Could do with a thicker mattress for adults on the bottom. Kids loved being up the top. A few extras as standard like leveling wedges, and foil windscreen cover would be amazing. We gained space by hanging a towel from the sun visors, and clipping the curtains back to the towel.
We are already thinking of booking again for another road trip. Excellent company to deal with.

β β β β β We had a lovely holiday in Italy for 10 days, for which we had been saving up for months. We were two couples, and took two campers on the holiday of our dreams. Throughout the trip we chose camping spots and routes that would ensure the campervans would not get dirty or worn out, and kept them especially clean.
One evening when we tried to take a turn into one of the impossibly small roads in Italy, our van slightly scraped a short metal pole, that scratched off some of the paint on the door (pics attached). At worst, it warrants a paint job.
When we returned the campers a few days later, the workshop that collected it in Rome said the system only offers one option - to charge us the maximum due on our 'standard' (the mid option) insurance (β¬1000!!!) and the customer service agent on the phone said they would independently verify the cost and return the excess. However, what followed was a nightmare.
We exchanged several emails with indie campers, who were very rude and insisted that "up to β¬1000" damages in our insurance meant that they have the right to charge β¬1000. They said we had actually made two scratches (completely untrue) and refused to budge. I'm sure they will write a very polite response to this, as part of the PR, but the actual service was nothing like it.
We know the scratch was our mistake and would be happy to pay for it - but only the right and fair price. The trip that we saved up for, for such a long time ended up costing almost double, and we are really struggling now, because of a small mistake and a completely unfair and abusive "policy" that we apparently don't have the right to get independently verified.
So many other people seem to have had the same experience. We world never recommend this terrible service to anyone.

β β β β β Van itself was good and we had a great time on the trip. However, while Indie's price is lower than some of its competitors, it's worth noting that the "leisure feature" modifications are quite cheaply built. The table was broken, the mosquito nets were torn and difficult to use without tearing further and one of the stove burners didn't work. We also found out the first night we used the stove that the gas cannister had been on ever since we left the pickup station, which was a bit scary and definitely should've been double-checked by the staff before they gave us the van.
The representative helping us check out seemed super rushed and didn't take us through any of the van's features, so we kept trying to pull up the instructional YouTube video while camping. He also couldn't give any guidance about where to dispose of toilet or grey water before returning the van, which is an issue when it's your first time renting a camper van and you don't know the area at all.
Overall I'd say that the company is fine and their marketing is on-point, but there's a reason they're cheaper than others.

β β β β β Very clean and well equipped vans in mint like condition. Staff was really helpful and flexible.
There's many awesome locations to visit in this part of Italy and accessing them with van saves lot of time.
