Il Castello è di incerta datazione: alcune fonti lo fanno risalire intorno all’ VIII-XIII secolo, mentre altre asseriscono che sia stato opera dei Normanni e riconducibile al XII secolo, per essere successivamente ristrutturato sotto gli Aragonesi. Nel tempo, la fortezza perse la funzione difensiva e divenne residenza gentilizia, la cui struttura è stata danneggiata dai numerosi eventi sismici. Il Castello, dalla forma trapezoidale, occupa una posizione strategica e un belvedere che offre un paesaggio incantevole e straordinario. Attualmente, ciò che resta del Castello sono le cinta murarie e le torri riportate alla luce. In the medieval area of Grottaminarda known as the "Fratta" is the characteristic Aquino Castle.
