★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Ferrovie dello Stato... Assente. Sul vero senso della parola. Ritardi, mancanza del WiFi sui treni e prezzi troppo alti per un servizio pari allo zero. Vergogna tipica italiana, mi correggo... Italiota.
 State Railways ... Absent. In the true sense of the word. Delays, lack of WiFi on the trains and prices too high for zero service. Italian typical Shame, I stand corrected ... Italiota.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Stazione adatta solo per viaggiatori senza bagaglio. Le scale mobili non funzionano per 360 giorni l'anno. Ma i treni viaggiano molto spesso in orario.
Station suitable only for travelers without luggage. The escalators do not work for 360 days of the year. But trains run very often on time.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Viaggio scomodo in ghiacciaia. Scendere al volo a villa San Giovanni per prendere l aliscafo per Messina una cosa da terzo mondo. Scale percorsi ad ostacoli ed altre scale. Dietro anziani boccheggianti che se non fosse stato per noi nessuno avrebbe aiutato. Pessimo servizio.
Uncomfortable journey in the icebox. Get off the plane at Villa San Giovanni to take a third-world hydrofoil to Messina. Obstacle course stairs and other stairs. Behind old people gasping for air no one would have helped if it hadn't been for us. Bad service.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ I prezzi dei biglietti sono alti. I tempi di percorrenza sono aumentati. Io negli anni '90 per andare da Messina a Milano ci mettevo 13 ore perché c'era il treno diretto, adesso ce ne vogliono 16 di ore perché il diretto per Milano non c'è più perché passa da Genova.
Ticket prices are high. Journey times have increased. In the 90s it took me 13 hours to go from Messina to Milan because there was a direct train, now it takes 16 hours because the direct train to Milan is no longer there because it passes through Genoa.

Il passaggio a piedi sui traghetti verso la Sicilia è possibile anche senza prendere il mezzo veloce, ma questa possibilità, oltre ad essere inspiegabilmente poco segnalata, è svilita da orari più che incerti delle navi che possono partire anche in anticipo rispetto all'orario o saltare del tutto.
Often broken escalators. The passage on foot on the ferries to Sicily is possible even without taking the fast vehicle, but this possibility, in addition to being inexplicably poorly reported, is debased by the more than uncertain timetables of the ships that can leave even earlier than the time or jump altogether.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Tutto molto bello ed efficiente (da Salerno in su) perché scendendo al sud le cose cambiano; ritardi, treni fatiscenti, alta velocità inesistente, collegamenti assurdi. Basti pensare che se da Messina vuoi raggiungere Agrigento devi cambiare almeno 3 treni e fare un viaggio minimo di 10 ore, altro che viaggi della speranza. Le 4 stelle vanno alle ferrovie reali, quelle che funzionano, quelle che per l'appunto ritroviamo da Salerno in su.
All very nice and efficient (up from Salerno) further south because things change; delays, dilapidated trains, high-speed non-existent, absurd connections. Suffice it to say that if you want to reach Agrigento from Messina you have to change at least 3 trains and make a minimum journey of 10 hours, other than journeys of hope. The 4 stars go to the real railways, the ones that work, the ones we find from Salerno up.

Eliminatele scale mobili.adesso lavori in corso per gli ascensori da un anno. Attendiamo fiduciosi che a Villa San Giovanni prima o poi si possa avere una stazione decente ed accessibile anche a chi è in carrozzina.
.Luglio 2018. Scale mobili guaste . Dopo una settimana continuano ad essere guaste. E con le valigie come facciamo ?
Update in December 2019.
Eliminate the escalators. Work has been going on for elevators for a year now. We await confident that sooner or later at Villa San Giovanni you can have a decent and accessible station even for those in a wheelchair.
.July 2018. Faulty escalators. After a week they continue to be broken. And how do we do with suitcases?
