One of the best wineries in Tuscany ever. A true reference point of the Morellino and also of the Tuscan coast thanks to the Bordeaux cuts that have crowned them in the elite of Tuscan viticulture. Here base wines don't really exist, you start drinking from a higher level. The structure is beautiful and scenic.

The visit was a great experience. The tour in the winery was personable, friendly and very informative. The booked tasting was simply awesome. The wines are of the best quality and have a fair price compared to other Super Tuscans. The Tuscan takeaway was also excellent - and plentiful.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ We had an amazing time at Fattoria le Pupille with our 3 kids (11, 14, 15). The host (Valentina) made our day as she was welcoming, knowledgeable, friendly, patient (our kids had many questions!) I would definitely recommend it!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ In short: pass by this house. Nothing to see here, very unfriendly. For a (very) detailed reason why so, I have the following to say about my experiences here:
Whenever I visit a winery, my intention is to create lasting impressions by talking to the people making the wine, understanding what drives them and what they are looking for in the product. Over the years I have enjoyed many a beautiful visit, always ending up buying a collection of wine that I relish to allow maturation in my cellar. Nothing is more joyous then opening up a bottle of 15 years past and remembering the previous visit.
I had visited Le Pupille many years before, with my father and a representative of Licata Vini. I remembered this to be a pleasant visit, though my recent experience would suggest this is no longer true less the presence of the latter was the sole reason for it.
This house is nót open on the hours Google is suggesting. We showed up, but were sent away since no one could show us around. We were suggested by email to return the next day when someone could help us out with a list of pricy "experiences". Our return email denoting we would be leaving that very day, and would then only be able to taste/buy wines was never answered.
When my colleague and I showed up early the following morning, we were kept waiting for half an hour only to be asked: "what do you guys want". It was clear that it was not appreciated we did not want to pay to see the cellars, we then could get "a sip of morellino" if all we wanted to do was buy wines. Also for some reason the lady that meeted us, could not emphasize enough how the charge for the visit would not be deducted if we ended up buying wines, ironically the only reason of us being there. The entire experience was very microaggressive and left us with a bad feeling for the remainder of the day.
Don't be mistaken: the wines this house produces are excellent. However it seems this house has intensive relations with vendors and does not need to rely on individuals. That is a business statement as any other, but I would then suggest keeping the doors closed to visits. For anyone interested in the wines I would suggest to buy them at your local reseller, that way you will at least get to taste the product in a comfortable setting. I can even get them at a discount at mine, although I would have been happy to buy these wines from the house itself had the experience been a welcoming one. After this visit, I doubt to stock up on these wines anymore.
Many other qualitative houses are not that far away, for anyone passing by the neighbourhood and looking for an interesting and pleasant visit.
Fattoria Le Mortelle is owned by Antinori and has an exceptionaly beautiful cellar from an architectural point of view. With COVID measures we could not visit these without reservations, but we were offered the possibility to traste the wines on the terrace overlooking the nature reserve of Diaccia Botrona. The 17 euros were gracefully forgotten when ordering the wines.
Rocca di Frasinello is perhaps even more astounding from an architectural point of view, with a terracotta colored tower rising up between the vineyards. An inverted pyramid below ground serves as the resting place for the barriques and was proudly shown, even without reservation. We got to taste every wine, even the more pricy Baffonero which was a delight. I am glad at least these bottles in my cellar will remind me once of a holiday long passed.
