Inadvertently we've been brought up to believe that a good restaurant is defined by: having a printed menu, stuffy staff to set the right illusion, or having an extensive wine-list, being able to choose your own food, or perhaps being expensive, or being a place that's in high demand. This is incorrect - we're all idiots. See, a dinner at the Farmhouse La Rondinella shows you that a truly great restaurant is defined by the trust customers place in delegating their entire dining experience to the chef. There's no menu (just a dietary preferences question), there's no wine list (just red, or white), there's no price list, no time limit, and not enough space in your stomachs for the 6 courses you'll eat during a 3-hour meal. With Farmhouse La Rondinella, you get a different experience entirely. The setting is a beautiful and elegantly presented restaurant sitting on a huge secluded farm. You're greeted by consistently-attired and extremely experienced but otherwise warmly unpretentious staff who care deeply about nothing else other than the food at their restaurant and your enjoyment of it. You sit at a large, spacious table surrounded by the ideal distance by other patrons (not too far so it's like in a dying village-hall, but not too close so it's like on the underground). You eat course after course of food prepared using the freshest ingredients sourced that very day from the farm itself, and drink their own wine from decanters. It's course after course after course of endless family-style servings of the most delicious Italian meals, starting with vegetable antipasti, then cold meat antipasti, then cooked meat antipasti, then a pasta course, then a meat course then desert, then a digestif course with liqueurs made in-house. All, by the way, are stunning. By the end of it, every apprehension about not knowing the menu, or not having wine to choose, or other such concerns become completely irrelevant, and you realise that you trust the chef, the owners and the staff implicitly with what it takes to host a spectacular evening. You, client, are not part of the decision-making process, because you, client, are wrong. How can you be right? Do you work there? Do you know the restaurant inside-out? Of course not. So sit down, forget everything you know, and get ready to spend the best ˜40Euro (per head) you'll part with this year. After 4 years of visiting this wonderful restaurant, I can say that I'm happy to admit now that I know nothing, and they know everything. This, is the highest of accolades.
