Il complicato congegno indica lo sfasamento tra l'ora solare reale e l'ora solare media, una differenza che non supera i 16 minuti. I valori negativi stanno ad indicare che il sole è più ad ovest, Cioè in anticipo rispetto all'ora media. I valori positivi indicano invece che il sole è più ad Est e quindi in ritardo rispetto all'ora media. Un enorme emiciclo con 26 statue ornamentali con al centro una imponente nicchia che avrebbe dovuto ospitare una statua di Re Carlo posta all'apice di una scalinata. Ma cosi non fu, perché la statua non venne mai edificata in quanto i moti napoletani del 1799 ne distrussero il calco in gesso. Al suo posto fu messa quindi una statua di Napoleone I che venne anch'essa distrutta al ritorno dei Borbone. Solo in seguito la nicchia, rimasta vuota, venne forata per dare accesso all'istituto religioso divenuto poi convitto. Oggi è la meravigliosa cornice di piazza Dante.
